We stayed 9 nights at the Amata Lanna over Christmas and New Year.
This hotel would make a good base for a short (1-3 nights) stay in Chiang Mai when you're out and exploring all day - but for us it turned out to be an expensive mistake.
Technically, there is nothing wrong with the Amata Lanna - the buildings are beautiful, the pool is pretty, the room and bath/shower were good, the breakfast was good, the service was good. But nothing makes up for the fact that this hotel is directly on a busy road, and there is a lot of traffic noise. Even if the temperature had allowed (now it was unusually cold in Chiang Mai) I wouldn't have dreamt of spending any time poolside or on the lounger outside our room it was so noisy. In the afternoon our ground floor room was nearly shaking with the drone of traffic. Luckily the traffic calmed down in the night so between midnight and 8am it was reasonably peaceful and we could sleep.
Based on the hotel's website and many TA reviews talking about an "oasis" we had naively imagined a 9-night stay with some excursions and city exploration, but also lots of resting and relaxing at the hotel - but this was really not possible. We tried to find another hotel but in the end did not check out because we had been made to pre-pay for the stay and the Amata Lanna refused a refund (understandable in peak season) - but it also made us wonder if their pre-payment requirement was due to so many previous guests having checked out once they realised the location. So we ended up renting a motorbike and touring around for 9 days and not recharging our batteries as planned.
The taxi service proposed by the hotel was ridiculously overpriced, so we only used it for airport transfers. They quoted 1000TB one-way to go to a golf course 18km from town (for comparison, we paid 2000TB for a taxi from Bangkok airport to Hua Hin which is a 2.5 hours drive).
Again, nothing formally wrong with the hotel but it is not the right place if you are looking for peace and relaxation.
