This is a true boutique hotel with just 12 lovely rooms and the delightful Toy and Yu on hand to cater for your every whim. We spent three nights there and returned for one night after a northern trip which was like coming home. The rooms were very lovely and the air con worked well. We found it a little difficult to find a corner to relax with a book, but we were out a lot of the time, also the beds were quite firm. However it was such a sweet place and everything we needed was at hand or nearby. We ate at the excellent Italian on the corner opposite the Anantara, we ate at the Anantara and the Good (or was it whole) Earth. Toy sent us to The Gallery which was not a success. We would definitely return.
NB Before you flog out there remember that the museum is closed on a Monday and Tuesday.

A real gem close to Night market. A proper family run hotel with friendly staff and service and great breakfast . The nearby road is busy in the daytime but is fine at night .
good recommendations from the owner for local trips and where to buy things. The hotel works with a good driver guide - Yut - who speaks good English which adds a lot to the experience.
We went specially for the Chiang Mai flower festival and the hotel is perfectly located for the start of that at the Nawarat Bridge.

Room Tip: Away from the road possibly better

We stayed here in January. The hotel is perfect. Nice Jacuzzi in the room. Romantic setting. Perfect breakfast. Perfect coffee. You can ask what you want. Very friendly people. Only in daytime you can hear some traffic. We booked a three day tour to the northern mountains at the hotel-reception. Our private guide Yut was perfect, had a nice car and spoke English very well. We met several hilltribe people (very impressive) and visited all the highlights in the north. Well, our visit to Chiang Mai and the mountains were just top top top.

I read the review from travelerBelgium and had to reply. My stay was in 2012 and I still remember it as the best hotel I have stayed in. It was peaceful and calm, and after a day touring around Chiang Mai or walking around the temples it was wonderful to return to this oasis. The pool was perfect, just the right temperature even in the rain !!! The rooms were calm and took away all the stress of Chiang Mai. Breakfast was special, a table for two poolside under a frangipani tree. Nothing was too much trouble for the brothers who looked after us. If you want a disco and a bar and a pool to do 50 metre lengths this is not the place for you, but if you want to be treated as if only you matter it is perfect.

We stayed 9 nights at the Amata Lanna over Christmas and New Year.

This hotel would make a good base for a short (1-3 nights) stay in Chiang Mai when you're out and exploring all day - but for us it turned out to be an expensive mistake.

Technically, there is nothing wrong with the Amata Lanna - the buildings are beautiful, the pool is pretty, the room and bath/shower were good, the breakfast was good, the service was good. But nothing makes up for the fact that this hotel is directly on a busy road, and there is a lot of traffic noise. Even if the temperature had allowed (now it was unusually cold in Chiang Mai) I wouldn't have dreamt of spending any time poolside or on the lounger outside our room it was so noisy. In the afternoon our ground floor room was nearly shaking with the drone of traffic. Luckily the traffic calmed down in the night so between midnight and 8am it was reasonably peaceful and we could sleep.

Based on the hotel's website and many TA reviews talking about an "oasis" we had naively imagined a 9-night stay with some excursions and city exploration, but also lots of resting and relaxing at the hotel - but this was really not possible. We tried to find another hotel but in the end did not check out because we had been made to pre-pay for the stay and the Amata Lanna refused a refund (understandable in peak season) - but it also made us wonder if their pre-payment requirement was due to so many previous guests having checked out once they realised the location. So we ended up renting a motorbike and touring around for 9 days and not recharging our batteries as planned.

The taxi service proposed by the hotel was ridiculously overpriced, so we only used it for airport transfers. They quoted 1000TB one-way to go to a golf course 18km from town (for comparison, we paid 2000TB for a taxi from Bangkok airport to Hua Hin which is a 2.5 hours drive).

Again, nothing formally wrong with the hotel but it is not the right place if you are looking for peace and relaxation.

Room Tip: All rooms are towards the road so it's not possible to ask for a more quiet room

Amata Lanna truly embodies what a perfect boutique hotel should be, Thai style building architecture that talks to its character, friendly staff, small (only 12 rooms) and very personal. Our room had simple yet elegant thai style furniture, a big comfortable bed and bathroom with a walk in rain shower and a Jacuzzi. The location was great as well. It is right on the river bank, 10 minutes walk to the warorot market, 10 minutes tuk-tuk ride will take you to the old city and 15 minutes taxi ride to the airport. They serve only breakfast and not lunch and dinner. Owner comes in at 7 AM and starts the kitchen, she cooks egg to your liking while the front office receptionist doubles as her support and helps with bread toast, serve coffee/tea etc., while the simple salad/fruits are for self-serving. The breakfast was simple yet good. Another good thing about Amata Lanna is that it is right across Ping Nakara and couple of blocks away from Anantara which we gladly used as landmarks. Since Nakara Jardin which is part of the Ping Nakara is highly rated in T.A. we also tried to have a meal, after couple of unsuccessful attempts we got a table on 1st Jan. for lunch, food was on the money and my wife loved their cakes. Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Amata lanna and would go back if we get back to Chiangmai. Only issue was the traffic noise but this is probably common everywhere in Chiangmai.
