Stayed at the great hotel 2 weeks ago, having been to Bangkok. Fantastic, helpfull staff, great rooms obviously well magaged. We had a garden view room which was really comfortable and quiet. The breakfast, while catering for the more asian people, was really good. Can not say enough good things about this place, ideally positioned near the town centre and night market it was really nice.

Room Tip: Get a garden facing room if possible

This hotel sees a constant in flow of large Chinese tour groups that is a negative for anyone looking for a tranquil place to stay. If you do not mind loud and obnoxious groups of Chinese shouting at breakfast every day and howling in the lobby, then it is an excellent place to stay. But for that, I would have given it 5 stars.

The concierge service is fantastic and rooms are nice and kept clean. I did notice the carpets in the hallway were stained, which should be remedied, especially in a five star hotel.

We were upgraded to a Horizon Club Executive Suite on our second visit. The rooms were large, comfortable, and well-furnished. Our preferences for certain Club services were noted and attended to daily by staff who were also friendly and knew how to make casual English conversation; which is a plus point in a provincial setting. We enjoyed the daily unhurried and pampered breakfast, tea, and evening cocktail (a light meal) served in the private Club setting, away from the usual hustle and bustle at the Kad Kafe. Attention to detail was impressive, like a small birthday cake delivered to our room after dinner. Being on the top floor as well ensured some privacy and quiet. The grounds are well-maintained, with separate swimming areas for children and adults. The gym is very adequate for exercise buffs like us. The Night Bazaar is a block away and the Sunday Walking Street (some high quality art pieces are worth viewing) is 3 mins on a tuk-tuk. The Concierge's knowledge is extensive and up to your challenging questions in terms of sightseeing and shopping. We stayed for 7 days, and likely will return in future.

Room Tip: Go for the Horizon Club rooms facing the pools. Rooms facing the mountain view are surprisingly quie...

Arrived at the Shangri-La Chiang Mai to its usual grand lobby and great reception. We had booked a club suite as usual and suggest that you do the same as you gain the cost back from access to the Horizon Club floor with is quiet breakfast time and all day drinks etc. Our room on the 10th floor had good views across the city and grounds, it was well appointed with a great bathroom as you would expect from this chain. It is very clean and well maintained.

We ordered firmer pillows and got our usual good nights sleep undisturbed by any noise.

The hotel is very well located near enough the old city to walk but still only 10 minutes from the airport by taxi. I would suggest that you do not book a car to collect you through the hotel as it is not worth it being 3 times the price of a local cab that can be easily organised upon arrival. The same can be said for your return journey. We took a day trip organised by the hotel for a mini bus and guide. This was very expensive as we realsied after the event. Our tip would be to organie this through many of the small tour companies that are available we you go walkabout.

All in all we will not stay anywhere else albeit that it is not the cheapest but I would say it is one of the best for the price in Chiang Mai.

Room Tip: Don't use the hotel to book any trips. Take local taxi's to and from the hotel. Stay in a...

I stayed here in January. The location is good, a short walk from the night bazaar. The room decor is nice and the service from all staff was excellent. If I must pick one bad point it is that the carpets in the room were starting to look a little tired otherwise everything was great.

We spent three nights here January 24-27 and as it was our first time at a Shangri-La property we came away with mixed feelings. As it was the big holiday week the hotel was packed full so room upgrade options were limited. As such, we opted for a few nights in the Presidential Suite which is huge, but frankly somewhat worn and not so grand. This room faced east toward the pool and had a great sunrise view with a great bathroom but that's about it. The last night we switched to an Executive suite which was more in-line with a standard two room suite and was nice but faced the street and was extremely noisy--even on the 12th floor. I definitely suggest going the Horizon Club route as the Club Lounge had a very nice buffet in the morning with made to order options and a decent evening food and drink set-up with the standard chicken wings, satay, etc. The Spa was decent, and the pool was nice but rather chilly as it was apparently not heated, and the pool service assistants were efficient. We did not eat much at the hotel but the pool food was good although the pool drinks were expensive and very small pours (glasses half full). Overall, our stay was fine, but not what I had anticipated...they do have good shopping options on the ground floor, and the staff was well training and professional. George in the Horizon Club went above and beyond and will support your stay well.

Room Tip: Avoid street facing rooms
