Just returned from a fantastic stay in the Shangri La which is conveniently located just a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport and within walking distance from the Night Bazaar which is well worth a visit. The hotel itself is impressive and the staff can not do enough to help. We booked a Horizon Club deluxe room which was well worth the little extra. We received private check-in and complimentary drinks and snacks all day in a private lounge overlooking the city. The room was spacious and very comfortable with a turndown service each evening and we particularly enjoyed the Occitane products in the bathroom. The pool is quiet and relaxing and very welcome after a day of sightseeing. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Chiang Mai.

This is a lovely, beautifully designed hotel in a good location in Chiang Mai. You are within walking distance of the night bazaar and there are tuk tuks waiting outside the hotel so you can be in other areas of Chiang Mai within minutes.

We stayed in the most basic room type but this was still lovely and certainly spacious enough for us both. We had a view overlooking the swimming pool and the hills beyond.

The pool area is lovely and has a separate Jacuzzi area. Pool attendants will set up a bed for you and bring towels and iced water. However, there are not many beds available and one afternoon we struggled to find two together as the pool area was busy. There is a café next to the pool but when we went to get a drink the place was empty and we couldn’t find anyone to serve us which was disappointing.

We used the concierge a couple of times to make restaurant bookings and although there was a slight language barrier this was a useful service and they will put a confirmation slip under your door for any bookings. When we weren’t sure how to get to one restaurant the concierge called a tuk tuk driver to the door and explained to him exactly how to get there and he took us with no problems.

There was an ok selection at breakfast time and some of the staff here could be a little slow. It was sometimes hard to get tea and coffee and even harder to get a refill. We stayed at the Bangkok Shangri La before arriving here and the breakfasts there were amazing with a massive selection so perhaps we wouldn’t have noticed these issues otherwise. We didn’t eat at the hotel for dinner so can’t comment on that but we did have a lovely meal at the nearby Chedi hotel which the concierge booked for us.

As others have mentioned this hotel was very quiet in the evenings. We went to the downstairs lounge (I think it was called Silipa Thai) a couple of times and there was hardly anyone else there. The Cocktails there were great though and the staff very friendly. The lobby lounge was also very quiet.

To sum up in spite of some small issues I would still highly recommend this hotel and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. I didn't enjoy staying here as much as the Bangkok branch but my husband preferred the Chiang Mai branch.

I went to the Shangri La with an open mind after my sister persuaded the whole family to go here. I made reservations and RECEIVED confirmation of our Horizon Club Premiere Room a month prior. I was happy w the communication back and forth. A week prior we received an email saying that Horizon Club rooms were no longer available and that we would be given a comprable room on another level and still get priveleges to Horizon Club. Upon arrival (after making transportation arrangements) the hotel said I was not a registered or confirmed guest (even though my dad and sister already checked in hours prior with the same reservation). We took a taxi to the hotel. They could not find the reservation, but rather than just give us a room they insisted to look for the missing reservation for 30 minutes. It was a miserable experience after an over 20-hour journey from door to door from the States. They finally gave us a room. Rooms are nice. Room service is also quite good.

The lobby is quite pleasant until they start having a cheesy piano player belt out tunes that literally make you leave the lobby. Service at bar in lobby was not good. On the interior/exterior of this hotel it is a nice 4 star. It is NOT a five star hotel. Service, however, makes a 3 star in my book. I'm sure there are better options in town. Look for them.

We stayed for 3 nights in November 2009. Wonderful hotel with amazing pool and spa. Spotless rooms and hotel. We were given an upgrade to a very large room overlooking pool. Excellent location. Wife was not feeling well so we spent a lot time in the hotel and at the pool and I had an excellent curry dinner from room service. Breakfast was excellent and the option of sitting outside. Good service from the staff. Business center - charge for internet service. Must be the best pool in Chaing Mai.

I stayed in the Premier Room - room is very stylish and big. The location is very close to night market and it is easy to go any where. Staff are nie and keen. Restaurant is good. I think this is a very smart choice in Chiang Mai.

We stayed at the Shangri La in Chiang Mai for 4 nights and found at an excellent hotel to stay at to explore Chiang Mai from. The hotel is within 5 min walking distance from the night market and all the street restaurants. Another 25 min gets you to the centre with the main temples.

Having stayed in several Shangri La's before, it meets all the standards and services you expect from the Shangri La. We stayed in a Premier Horizon Club room which was very spacious, had all amenities and facilities you expect from this class of hotel and the room and had a nice view over the mountains.
I always recommend a club room as it gives you access to the Club floor which means drinks and snacks at sunset and a lavish breaksfast in the morning.
The girl at the Club floor reception was extremly helpful and friendly and made our stay even more enjoyable. It is not a lively hotel and on a couple of occasions we were the only people at breakfast onm the clubroom.

It is a city hotel, and it is also aimed at the business traveller (it has large conference facilities) but wat does make it nice is that it has a large garden with spa facilties and a nice, large swimming pool with plenty of space to enjoy the sunshine - a welcome relief from the hussle and bussle of the Chiang Mai streets.

We didn't eat at the hotel as we prefer the experience of having Thai food at the countless street restaurants but judging by the quality of the breakfast I can only assume the restaurant food is good.

So often you look at a hotels website and then at the candid pictures on here and they are NOTHING alike. Happily, the photo's on the Shangri La represent the reality..nice serene lobby, beautiful gardens and pool and lovely wall hangings/artworks throughout the hotel. We stayed in a premier room with our own private garden courtyard, room was spacious, nicely furnished. We loved the thai style gold leaf cabinet that disguised the mini bar. Bathroom was large and well appointed.

Had breakfast daily at the Kad Kafe and a few lunches and dinners. Good variety of food on all occasions and of consistent and good quality. Especially loved the desserts! Was fairly quiet when we were there but not empty. Was a few conferences etc taking place but definitely not over crowded nor a ghost town. Most days only a handful of other people at the pool area. Gym facilities were good, only disappointment was segregated spa and sauna inside male/female change rooms, might be a plus for some people but were wanting to sauna together. Housekeeping were very efficient and went out of their way to help out with a lost item. All the staff were really helpful and spoke really good English. The location was good, a short walk to the night bazaar and easy enough to get tuk-tuks to other outer attractions. We had considered the Meridian and D2 but am glad we chose the Shangri la
