I chose De Naga after finding a great offer online and reading the positive comments on TA. The room was to my expectations, spacious and well maintained. The whole hotel is very clean and modern. The service is super friendly. I particularly liked the breakfast. The bread selection was great and the home-made jams are a special touch. I looked forward to breakfast every morning. The cafe staff deserve a special mention. It was my friend's birthday while we stayed there and they went above and beyond to accommodate our wishes and helped make her birthday morning very special.

I stayed at the De Naga for five nights in August 2011, and all the positive comments I had read on Tripadvisor proved true. I was in a deluxe room and it was well maintained. It was not a room with a balcony or view, but that was not why I chose the De Naga. I was there for a place to put my feet up and to take advantage of its location (not there for the pool). My room was on the third floor and it was quiet. I do wish that a room with a larger bed had been available (had two single beds). The room had complimentary coffee and tea, and each day two bottles of drinking water were provided (mini-bar refrigerator). There was no iron in the room.

The staff was very friendly (really liked the front desk attire). The buffet breakfast offered Asian and Western foods (coffee, juice, milk, eggs to order, bacon, cereal, toast, pastries, fruit, rice, soup….) and it worked for me. I like that breakfast started at 06:30 (for an early tour start). The laundry service was fine. The hotel provides two computers and Wi-Fi for internet access. There is a tour desk. I arranged my own tours and airport transportation.

The location of the De Naga is great. It is in the old city, by the moat and is very advantageous for walking to many nice restaurants, pubs and markets. I also found the Café De Naga to be a comfortable place to close out the day. I really like how the De Naga sits back from the busy road. The De Naga is worth the price and I would stay there again.

In addition, I found a very nice place for a massage behind the De Naga. Walk through the parking area under the hotel, make a left and you will see Bon Massage on the left. Bon Massage is located in a house and offers more traditional style massages in a very comfortable atmosphere. This was my third trip to Thailand and I have become a connoisseur of foot massages. And, I had several very enjoyable two-hour foot massages there for 360 Baht (per massage).

We have pretty much arranged our hotel and itinerary through TA and I have to say, so far (with one more to go), its been "the" gem of trip.

At the heart of the old city (which in my opinion, is where its all at in Chiang Mai) this hotel is hidden - as all good things are in Chiang Mai - behind some side streets and the main stretch bordering the canal.

From the outside you wouldn't probably be aware its there - but coming into the court yard, there is the fantastic facade and entrance to the hotel.

On arrival, we were met with smiles (as everywhere else in Thailand I would add) and a welcome sweet tea - cold. Being taken to our room, we were told we were upgraded. For what reason, we weren't told but we weren't going to knock it.

The room was exquisite - a large king size bed, very large bathroom (large bath and seperate shower cubicle which can fit at least two people), a safe and very large wardrobe.

In the evenings, there will be a knock on the door or when you return from your night out, you will find a corner of the bed folded and a note saying something along the lines of "have a nice sleep" and a hand crafted flower out of bamboo leaves. Its not necessary and certainly not expected - but its definitely a nice touch.

Wireless internet is complimentary and dished out by voucher on arrival as well as complimentary computers in reception (where I am currently typing this, in fact).

Reception is a good place to note - here, apart from the impressive seating and the ornaments, also has a permanent desk where a "consultant" sits. I say consultant as this individual - who varies from time to time - deals with all your travel, excursions, taxi arrangements and is particularly helpful in pointing out POI's. Whilst again this isn't necessarily needed, it was a welcome touch and definitely assisted in mapping our itinerary whilst we were in the city.

If you do wish to have a swim there is a small pool - but as its in the internal courtyard, there is very little room as there is only 6 beds in which to lounge.

Attached is a large dining area which is sadly only used for breakfast - which has what appears to be a standard chef on hand for cooked items (eggs etc) but also a buffet with your usual continental but also Thai foods at self service. I say sadly as this would have been useful for our first night in Chiang Mai, not knowing where to eat and arriving from a flight - but there is a small cafe at the entrance to the complex on the street which does light bites, tasty and relatively cheap (a Pad Thai - noodles, around 80BHT, thats about 2GBP).

Overall this is perfect for people who want a base in the centre of the city - not too loud and set back from the activity - whilst being able to offer a 5 star experience at a very agreeable cost!

Can't beat the location and the reception staff. Room was quiet and well-cleaned each of the five mornings I was there. The wifi is adequate, but needs upgrade. The breakfast staff was typical of American teenagers - more interested in talking to each other and (untypical of Asian workers) did not deem service as a worthy occupation or profession. However, if you can get a second cup of coffee, it is excellent.

Highlights
Reasonably priced and centrally located on the east side of the old city within walking distance to Night Market and Sunday Walking Market. Nicely appointed rooms with fast wifi (complimentary). Staff at the Reception is genuinely friendly and eager to assist with directions and other general inquiries.

Needs improvement
The hotel is in need of a talented Housekeeping/Maintenance Manager as the cleanliness/maintenance is below expectations. Examples: worn out towels, holes in bed sheets/duvet covers, lime build up in shower stalls and on bathroom fixtures, dust build up in corners, inside and under the furniture, white canopy above breakfast restaurant patio is almost completely covered in mold/mildew. On the food and beverage side, the presentation of the breakfast buffet is uninspired, during the breakfast rush, the cleanliness/appearance of the buffet is not maintained. Ceramic cups and tea pots are heavily discolored and are in need of a good bleaching or replacement.

The above review is meant well, with the intent to point the management of the hotel in the right direction to lift the product to the next higher level.

If it wasn't for the cleanliness/maintenance concerns, I would have rated the De Naga Hotel as "very good".

Room Tip: PS: to avoid looking directly at other buildings, request for a room on the 4th floor.

I find this boutique hotel affordable, perfectly located yet quiet. The hotel's decor is elegant and not under or over done. Breakfast is fantastic especially the home made jams and pastry. The pool is small but sufficient to cool you down if you are too hot from walking. I rented a car and surprised to find it has ample car parking spaces. Staff are very helpful.
