We stayed in a villa on this beach. it is quiet and out of the way, which we wanted...but this also means that you are far from shops, supermarkets etc. The beach is beautiful (all the positives in other reviews which I agree with). One thing to be aware of if swimming in the sea, there are a lot of rocks which cannot always be seen below the surface of the water. I managed to scrape my shin on one, and ended up going to hospital when it swelled up. That was the end of swimming for me, and everyone else stuck to swimming in the pool after that. We had some stunning sunsets whilst we there, over the Ang Thong Marine Park.

What makes good beach is a very personal thing. Do you want a long shallow & flat sea good for kids swimming, or waves for surfing, or rocks for exploring?

We spent 10 days at a villa on Bang Po beach and although not perfect has a number of charms.

Why I liked it:-

- Very peaceful / a complete lack of people. In contrast to the popular Chaweng where you fight for space, at Bang Po you can walk for 5 minutes without seeing another soul & the only beach seller we saw was selling ice creams.

- Reasonable sand, ok (ish) for sand castles, in some parts of the beach the sand can get a little sharp, however there is a usuallly line of soft sand along the high tide line.

- Good / interesting sea, in lots of places along the beach there are some good spots & rocks for intersting snorkeling / exploring.

- Overhanging palms and other trees, good for shade, attaching swings too & generally looking like an idyllic tropical paradise...

What to be aware of:-

- Less people = less businesses, there are plenty of cafes / massage huts, but at times there can be a 10 minute + walk from one to the next. They mostly seem to be in clusters.

- The beach is thin, at high tide it can be only a metre or 2 wide at some places.

- The sand is not the best in the world, but I found it nearly comparable with Chawengs sand.

Overall we loved it, the lack of people on a lovely beach being the key factor as it really makes you feel like you've found a hidden gem

Seldom visited beach as it's very out of the way and can't be seen from the road so it's lovely and quiet and the many restaurant owners seem to have cleaned it up so very nice to walk along. A lot of little Thai restaurants and cafes with more opening every day, all of them are excellent and there is a very sweet little coffee shop (also serves alcohol) with excellent iced coffee called the 5 Monkees (has odd opening hours but usually open in the evenings). Recommend any of the restaurants never had a bad meal at any of them. Amongst them are Blue Marlin, Relax, Haad Bang Po, Swiss Restaurant, Som Restaurant, Krua Bang Por, Mickey Mickey.

During our tour around samui by bike we found the beach in Bang po. Was not too crowded comparing to popular beach like bophut and chaweng. We just spend a day there and having local food and young coconut juice.

Must visit the place.
