Where to start?! Thailand is among one of the most beautiful places I have been but I was saddened and at time sickened (literally) by the amount of garbage and trash. The beach is covered. It should be called a sandy landfill. It made me disgusted in the human race. The ocean is just so beautiful and to think that so much trash comes from it hurts me. My hotel was affordable and Chaweng is definitely busy. I prefer a more clean, quiet spot but people are still friendly and kind. Expect to get asked to buy anything every 5 min too.

We were not staying in the Chaweng area, however were hanging out on the Chaweng main road almost every evening. The Beach is probably the most crowded on the island. Though its a long and broad beach due to the crowds and all the water sports the area feels packed.

There are a lot of water sports activities here so if one is interested in trying out any then this is the place to be. Also if you want to be close the the vibrant part of the island in terms of eating/drinking out and partying scene, then Chaweng would fit the bill.

Staying in Chaweng is great you are close to restaurants beaches, taxis, major attractions, food and drinks, shopping, cabaret and spas. It is busy but you are nice and close to everything. Just remember not to shake anyone's hand you don't know they always want something. Be careful of timeshares there was one waiting at the airport for a free taxi to our hotel if we sat in on a 30 min presentation and a few days later approached by Simon (a Brit) on a scooter with a German (I think) to sit in on a 90 minute one and you can win iPads and other stuff. The only way to get away from these people is to simply walk away because they won't shut up. Otherwise great area.

As mentioned by other posts - only just hopped out of taxi in Chaweng for a bit of shopping - approached by a Brit (simon), (from absolute), first question he asked "are you aussies", then came the diatribe about free prizes - just had to spend 90 minutes in a session - smell a rat straight away - brushed him off , though he was persistent. Discovered later as suspected a scam, mainly targeting aussies. Not sure why the Thai police don't shut them down.
So if approached just walk away or just say your not an aussie.

Please be warned when you travel into Chaweng about the Absolute and the other holiday scams. If you are not a backpacker - you will be targeted by a guy or guys on a scooter handing out a prize scratchy. They will try to lure you in by insisting that you check your scratchy immediately. Either you or your wife/husband will win some amazing gift, like an IPad. But then you'll be told that in order to claim your prize you will have to go to office and attend an information session. And guess what - you'll have to go to the session immediately - before you get a chance to check the internet and find out about the scam. The sales guy will throw in some sob story about his personal circumstances - DON'T LISTEN, JUST WALK AWAY.
