I really like it last time I was in Pattaya. Heading there again in a couple of months and will definitely make sure I return. But don't wast your money on the additional red snapper. Not necessary and almost just a waste. Enough good food in the buffet.

The restaurants along the beach road are fine, yes. Good food, beautiful sea view, reasonable prices compared with what you are used to at home, nice ambient - among other tourists. But where and how do the Thai people eat out? Let's go and see: from the Pattaya North Road, turn to the Third Road, go ahead some 600 meters (0.4 miles), and after Soi 2 you'll find one of my top choices, the Ninja BBQ Buffet restaurant, on your left. It won't cost a fortune to get there by taxi, just remember to negotiate, as always. Their neon signs are only in Thai, but you'll certainly recognize the image of a pig lying on a frying pan. That's what the type of the restaurant in Thai, "moo kra ta", literally means in English: "pig on a pan"! And the waiters know just enough English to be able to serve you.

The dining hall is very large, ascetic, and I must say it looks more like a military canteen... but you're not coming here to admire a fancy interior such as in a fashion magazine. What you lose in glitter and glamor, you gain in the fantastic atmosphere, tasty food and great people! A restaurant like this is indeed best enjoyed in the company of your family and friends, as dining together is an important part of the overall experience. That's exactly what the locals do, and a handful of tourists have found their way here, too.

You can choose between a barbeque buffet, including pork, beef and chicken, and a seafood buffet. The meat comes in small pieces in various marinades, all marked in English, too. You can also pick pork liver, kidney and heart from the buffet table if you dare. You cook the meat yourself at your table: the waiter brings a pot with glowing pieces of coal, puts a Mexican sombrero-like lid on top of it, and you grease it with pork fat that's also available from the buffet. All pieces of meat are raw, so make sure to cook them properly, for at least five minutes. Meanwhile, the waiter pours some chicken stock on the side of the lid, and you can go and get some vegetables and mushrooms to put in there, and you'll have a soup for a starter. And rice is of course available as a side order. This is real slow food - what's the hurry, anyway? After you're finished with the main course, go and get some ice cream from a big chilled tank. The price for all this is ca. 160 to 190 Baht, depending on the number of diners at the table. Excluding drinks and tip, understandably.

There's also a seafood buffet with different kinds of fish, squid, prawns, crabs, clamps, mussels... again, you pick up what you want onto a plate, then take the catch to the chef who will cook it on an out-door grill. Don't forget all the tasty sauces! This costs a bit more, ca. 300 Baht per person but hey, how much is that in your own currency? Almost nothing!

A night in a real Thai restaurant is an experience to remember! A visit to the Third Road pays off, literally, because as everywhere, the farther away you go from the main tourist areas, the lower the prices get - an extra benefit to make your night in Pattaya a success. Hygiene? It's sufficient, believe me. Just relax and enjoy yourself. I've been many times to this place and never got any trouble whatsoever. On the contrary, I'm always looking forward to come back again!
