“High tea? Not fantastic”
Reviewed 24 March 2014 via mobile

The Dalat Palace Luxury Hotel is, on many levels, lovely. All those original or replica fittings, together with the old Citroen in the forecourt, are lovely touches. The restaurant boasts a high tea (330,000 d) every afternoon which was, however, a disappointment. Tea in tea bags.... Yep, I can manage leaf tea at home), the lovely little selection of crust free sandwiches unfortunately toasted (and brought out about twenty minutes after the tea); and only a few of them. The little cakes were a delight, but the nine or ten of them were too much - more (untoasted) sandwiches would have been better, or perhaps a bit of a choice). then the 'traditional Vietnamese scones'(1 per person) with pre sweetened possibly mock cream, with a single strawberry, was a disappointment. When we asked for more tea (the long delay between tea and cakes was thirsty work) we got our tea pots refilled but with the same Dilmah bags.

Ah well, the ambience was fine, but at the price we did expect something a little more in keeping.

Third hotel we stayed at on this Vietnam vacation. I have always wanted to stay here so I was really looking forward to the hotel. I booked a deluxe room with balcony through Qantas travel and the hotel gave me the best deluxe room they had. Great views straight down to Xuan Huong lake overlooking the gardens. The room was spacious, clean and furnished French colonial style. Good all around and a large balcony to enjoy a drink or two.

Room was well serviced and breakfast most enjoyable. Wine was a bit pricey though for the quality if drunk by the glass.

You must visit the library and check out all the whole hotel to enjoy the atmosphere. Great architecture, beautiful paintings and furniture. Don't forget larry's bar as this is a great place to enjoy a drink.

While not a regular golfer, I did sneak a round in at the golf course. Fantastic course, great caddie and really enjoyed this excursion. Strongly recommend you have a round of golf if you have the time.

Only comment is while this is a five star hotel and charges a five star price, it does not provide five star service. Reception staff could be more engaging with guests by asking if they need any help, etc. This cannot compare with other five star hotels in Ho Chi Minh city such as the Park Hyaat, Caravelle, Asiana Intercontinental, Sheraton, etc.

Also, not sure why there is large buddha statue in the lobby? Does not relate to the French Style.

Room Tip: Book a deluxe room with balcony if you can.

Location is the best.
I was walking to Crazy house. It takes less than 20mins. And lake is just in front of you.
Building itself shows everything.
Very historical building since 1922.
Enjoyed my stay very much.
Staff very friendly as well as professional.
Dinner was good but I felt food quality need some improvement.
But again service was wonderful.
Spa was also nice.
A little minus point was staff did not control the light. A little darker light will provide more relaxing atmisphere.
I was a bit worry that it could be old and not good condition without international brand.
But overall I had very relaxing stay with them.

I have just read the review by bryengaile and the majority of it is identical to my planned review we had stayed here twice before and had a similar room with superb views of the lake and a wonderful panorama of all the lights of Dalat at night, It is a grand old colonial Hotel with large rooms and the furniture is dark but bulky , all in the grand old fashioned colonial style, with a very comfortable large bed. The staff are always smiling but seemed to have very little English and rarely came from behind the desk,
we breakfasted in the enormous dining room on our first morning but were very disappointed (previous breakfasts had been excellent and the terrace is lovely) We were fortunate that the Hotel has contact with the French cafe on a street behind and we were able to have an excellent French breakfast and other meals (on out hotel account) We did not risk the Hotel,s evening meals which were very expensive. The lounge area with pianist is pleasant
There is a gym and tennis courts but no pool
Having been very happy on our previous visits we were disappointed that at the very high prices charged the Hotel was not up to the anticipated standard and not making the most of its wonderful site.

Room Tip: Be sure to chose a room overlooking the lake --definitely the major reason for selecting this Hotel

We stayed 3 nights -
The Good - the hotel has huge rooms, a great location overlooking the lake, the hotel car was waiting for us at the airport.

The Bad - The staff although anxious to please, and beautifully presented, (and there were plenty of them), were either untrained or inexperienced or both. Our stay started with the receptionist asking us to follow her up to our room. The room was on the second floor up 2 huge stairways, ( 64 steps, the old hotel has 15ft. ceilings. ) After stopping after 1 floor and asking if there was a lift she apologised and said the only lift was a luggage lift used by the staff. As we are of a mature age we opted for squeezing in the luggage lift for any upward trips during our stay. It worked O.K. The prices for everything in the hotel were outrageous compared to anything outside the hotel. We are used to paying a premium for 5 star but this was over the top. I have attached a photo of the room phone, it says it all about this hotel, past its use by date!!

The Lonely - As the hotel has the old system of keys in a pidgeon hole behind the reception desk I was able to see we were one of 8 rooms occupied of the 40 on offer. 6 rooms were a japanese golfing group who didn't dine or patronise any of the bars. Happy hour at the main bar, Larry's Bar, had us and one other couple.

Stayed 3 nights at the Dalat Palace. Very impressive hotel set atop of a hill looking down onto the town. The rooms are very traditional but well appointed with comfortable furnishings and great views. The bathroom is again very traditional with a free standing bath and a shower running from the taps which makes it a bit hard, but not impossible, to have a shower as others reviews have noted but we wanted traditional features so this is a small price to pay. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay and the breakfast was in the fabulous setting of the main restaurant. We had dinner one night in the 'Pub' in the cellar and whilst we were literally the only guests in the place the food was good and the staff very efficient. Its an easy walk into the town from the hotel but coming back up the steps can be a bit of a struggle after a couple of drinks :-) We also used the Spa for a couples massage and whilst it was a bit more expensive than most it was still very good. The only downside is that there is no pool but we knew that when we booked so we made use of the loungers in the grounds to read and relax.

Room Tip: Got to have a view over looking the lake and town

We stayed here on the night of 1/31/14. You can see by my reviews that I am not a complainer. In advance of our stay, I could get no emails answered by the hotel and eventually had to reach out to the chain's HQ to get an answer to an inquiry about offered airport transport. There were hardly any other guests but, nonetheless, when we arrived reception was surly and slow. The concierge could not communicate and had incorrect or no information about Dalat. The room was gloomy, small and very cold.

Worst was a lack of honesty and responsiveness. When we checked out we made a terrible blunder and left $400 in cash in the safety deposit box. Our mistake! Nonetheless, we realized it immediately but, when we went back to the room, it was already gone. Little effort was made to locate the person(s) who might have just taken it and the one denial from the housekeeper who was already missing but reached by phone was accepted at face value. We had a flight to catch and left. We repeatedly wrote and asked for follow-up and never received the courtesy of any communication whatsoever.
