We insisted on booking Empress Dalat because of the excellent reviews
we read in several reputable travel guides and websites even though
our wonderful Vietnamese travel agent tried to encourage us to book
elsewhere. The young manager of the Empress who arranged our
transport from Saigon and met us on arrival was helpful and kind, as
was the capable and very safe driver who drove the seven hour trip
from Saigon. It was a shame that the good news stopped there. We
checked out after 24 hours, forfeiting a further nights accommodation
in three rooms rather than suffering the misery of this place any
longer. The Dalat Empress is tired, smelly, broken and unwelcoming.
We tried in vain to discover the hotel we'd read about but it simply
doesn't exist. The rooms are run down, with a hideous smell of mould
and mildew and complete lack of air. Many fittings were broken (we
couldn't shut the wardrobe door so had to put up with an automatic
flourescent light in our face all night), the blankets were old and
grubby and when we turned down the sheets we discovered our bed was
home to several dead bugs, the bed bases were worn and tatty and the
traffic noise through the night felt like we were sleeping on the
road. We might have been able to laugh through three nights of
"Fawlty Towers" style accommodation if it wasn't for the five
miserable and unhelpful staff who all leered at us through breakfast.
We decided if they were that unhappy working there then nothing was
going to make this bearable.

The highlight of our stay in Dalat was a full day tour with the Dalat
Easy Riders. The kids (and the grown ups) still smile at the thought
of the fun we shared with these larrikins. We learnt all about local
farming, flower farms, coffee plantations, rice wine, the history of
Vietnam, silk worms and weaving, Buddhism and of course motorbikes
thanks to Jeans and his excellent riders. We never expected such an
educational day could be so much fun! We felt really safe on the
bikes and were delighted by the beautiful countryside just outside
the town.
We'd confidently recommend Dalat Easy Riders to anyone and everyone
who is planning a trip to Vietnam and we all hope to come back one
day and have a much longer adventure with these guys exploring more
of Vietnam. There seem to be some other companies passing themselves off as the original easy riders so be sure to find the guys with Dalat Easy Riders on their jackets to travel with the original guys.

This is a great looking hotel (from the outside) right on the lake. We are not overly fussy and tend to acceptthings as they are.........however, the rooms are overpriced (USD$45 per night) and in need of refurbishment. Aircon sounds like it's operating, but is totally ineffective. Room had a musty smell on entering, but we got used to it. There was a strong sewage smell in the bathroom which was quite off-putting, however. There are many better, cheaper hotels in Da Lat than the Empress. On the plus side, staff try hard, breakfast is good and the location is perfect. Da Lat is a beautiful place with plenty to do and see. It's much cooler than sea level places in Vietnam, so you can get by without aircon most of the time.

This place was well positioned, near the town centre and across the road from the lake. We had an excellent room with a lake view,
Breakfasts were adequate and the staff generally helpful. However as it was pretty chilly at night we had to ask for our bedspread back, for some reason they'd removed it after the first night.

Beware the water. They provide complimentary water in the room which one immediately chills in the fridge. However the fridge also contains another brand of water which we unthinkingly consumed. On checking out we were chased down the hotel steps by someone demanding about $3 for two small bottles of water (about 10 times the local cost of a bottle). It's not the amount but the fuss created by an innocent mistake that irritated us. We'd actually only consumed one bottle so negotiated the charge but the whole episode seemed like a minor scam and soured our impression of the hotel.

Dalat has an excellent golf course too, probably the best in Vietnam.

The Empress is a bit like the rest of Dalat - needing to move ahead with the times in terms of tourists. This hotel was more like an old motel.
The location is good overlooking the lake and the place looks nice from the outside, but the service is apethetic (not that I can blame them!) and the rooms have very old decor and are damp with little ventilation.
We had to take a twin room for the same price as the double we had booked as they had let another couple spend an extra night there. The breakfast was terrible - cold food and coffee. Management needs to drop the prices or do the place up.

After staying in one of the many budget hotels in Dalat on our first night, we wanted to get away from the noise and chaos of the market area and find a quieter spot. Someone recommended the Empress.

First impression is excellent. The hotel sits on a hill overlooking the lake. There was a very friendly porter at the street level garage who directed us up the stone steps to the front lobby. As we entered, we saw a gorgeous courtyard with a view of the lake.

Lucky for us, there were three rooms available. We asked to see the rooms and loved them. They are cozy and quiet, with dark wood trim and tile floors. The bathrooms are gorgeous, with wooden shutters on the windows and granite shower stalls. The place feels very old world, which makes sense given that it began life as a French Colonial villa.

We loved our stay at the Empress. Breakfast was included in the price and it was simple, but lovely. There were noodles, egg dishes and breads, along with various little Vietnamese tidbits. My only disappointment was that they didn't serve the fabulously intense Vietnamese coffee. But the coffee they did serve was quite delicious.

I loved the room. It had comfortable beds and tasteful decor. There was a beautiful little handwoven rug between the two beds and, a rarity in Vietnam, a reading lamp!

It is true that when we first checked the room out, it smelled a bit musty. The woman showing us the room said that it was mosquito spray and would dissipate by the time we were ready to come back that afternoon. She was right.

Our favorite part of the hotel was the beautiful courtyard. We spent a lot of time just sitting around drinking tea (or wine!) and enjoying the view. The gardens were well kept and lovely and the staff efficient and friendly.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and look forward to staying there again.
