Rave review. Villas are amazing and staff even better. Nothing a problem. Friendly and efficient. Love it. Lots of room for families. Travelled with adults and young children. Great pool. Restaurant and buffet breakfast first class.

A beautiful hotel, with wonderful warm and friendly staff. The room was beautifully decorated French colonial style with poster beds antic bathroom, but very homely! We cannot better the comments and detailed reviews supplied by others. You do get what you pay for, but no money can buy the genuine thoughtfulness and caring shown so often, and the extra mile that people went to to make sure our honeymoon was the trip of a lifetime. We loved it!
Room Tip: Ask for a villa as close as possible to the pool and restaurant area.

We had a lovely time but unfortunately at check out ended up paying a rate we think was overpriced for the room we stayed in. We complained to say that we only stayed at a smaller room and not in the 39.5sqm studio but did not stand a chance. They suddenly insisted that the small room we had was a studio and it was more expensive as it was located on the 1st and not ground floor. Very disappointed with the level of sophistication as we expected more!

This is a very different place indeed, but very nice!! We were to friend traveling across Vietnam and had the chance to stay 3 nights at this resort! Dalat climat is a lot cooler than the rest of Vietnam and we were amazed by the cheminee and the beautiful electric heater but we enjoyed it in the evening! The room was beautifully decorated French colonial style with poster beds antic bathroom, but very homely! Lovely complementary cookies and teas and arrival, and aromatherapy oil on demand, pillow menu, irresistible spa treatments, delighful slate heated pool and beautiful gardens under giant pin trees.... What more to say, a how not to love this place!!! Unique!! I forgot the restaurant and the food, out of this world!!

We stayed 6 nights and probably the highlight for us was the cool weather and the scenery. The resort was quite a surprise, we have not stayed anywhere quite like this resort. It is obviously catering for the many thousands of Vietnamese people who come to the highlands to escape the heat on the coast. The "villas" are actually large old houses that are divided into 3 or 4 units where the guests in each house have to share a living room and dining room. Not ideal, we certainly did not want to share these facilities with people we did not know and who were mostly non english speaking people. The rooms are badly in need of maintenance and some updating. The garden areas were untended and badly in need of weeding and grass mowing. This gave the area which could have been spectacular an unkempt look. On the plus side, the staff were very accommodating and helpful and the restaurant was very good serving excellent Vietnamese food. The bar area was also quite good and a nice place to sit and have a quiet drink in the afternoon. The resort is situated in a very pretty area and the views from units are lovely. Sadly, I would not recommend this resort to my friends. However with a little research into meeting the needs of travellers and some repair and renovations, this could be a very nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a unit that does not have shared facilities if this a concern

We booked the Ana Mandara, because we've been to the same brand in Nha Trang, and we simply loved the concept (with a very thoughtful eye for details, the rooms were little wonderlands). We thought Ana Mandara Da Lat would be the same.

It is, however, completely different.

The rooms are old. This is part of the concept, as the "villas" seem to be real, old houses, redone into a hotel compound. There's a certain charme to the idea of living in a "real" Da Lat villa and the furniture supports that idea: You have the old style bathtub, the light switches look as if they date back 50 years ago, there's a fireplace, and everything is a bit heavy and dark. It's like your grandmother's house or your great-grandmother's house, including the fact that you'll never get the temperature of the shower right, and will either freeze to death or burn yourself with piping water. It COULD be cozy. Except for the fact that they rent out the villas (depending on the size of the houses) for 2-6 families. We shared our villa with 3 other families.

And there's the big flaw: The walls of the houses have apparently never been designed to be anything else than normal inside walls. Meaning: They are thin. You will be woken up at 6 am in the morning, because your neighbours watch the news on Vietnamese TV. If you want to take a nap in your room at 1 pm, there will be kids shouting or adults talking or music TV running. It's like in a neighbourhood. Or: It's like in a nice little backpacker hotel. Point is: This is no backpacker hotel, they charge you quite a lot of money and think of themselves as a high class hotel. Our complete ground floor was a huge area like a living room with a small veranda, but it was completely useless, because it was supposed to be shared by "everybody". Now, obviously, if you put 4 groups of strangers into one house, nobody will use the "common room". For what? This might be great place if you are actually travelling with a big group of people - but that's not what you expect from a hotel that is supposed to be a hideaway.

It gets even worse:

The main path, a cobble stone path, leading through the forestry compound, looks like a nice walking path connecting the different villas. In reality, it is the only way for the people living on the other side of the hotel to go to work or go to town. Your "lovely path" is, in fact, a street. There will be motorbikes. There will be even small cars. Some motorbikes drive careful. A lot do not. They drive like Vietnamese drive on a normal street. This is not a place to come with your kids. It is certainly not a place to let your kids run around unattended. If you walk to the end of the compound, the cobble stone path turns into a mud path and goes straight on into a neighbourhood of peasants and poorer people. There are wild dogs barking. There are strangers in shaggy clothes walking around your villa. In the evening, the hotel puts up some guards, but it obviously can't hinder people to go to work. You will go to sleep with the sound of the karaoke machine of those neighbours. (If the TV next door is not louder than the karaoke machine...).

I've never seen such a strange concept of a hotel, that does not really seem to know what it wants to be or what it wants to represent. Some of the views around the compound are outright ugly. The hotel borders some kind of shantytown of Da Lat, the tin roof kind of suburb. Maybe they want to make a point that poverty still exists in Vietnam. It's just not exactly what you want to see on your way from the restaurant to your bed. Also, the whole compound looks a bit muddy, and old, and the plants are not really tended to. I don't expect an English garden, but this is not "nature" neither, this is just some plants, a street and earth and mud.

The food is, as in all those high class hotels, overpriced, and of mixed quality. The breakfast buffet is actually very nice, the potatoes are crispy, the asian soup corner is the real deal, and they know how to do omelettes. Same is true for the dinner buffet. Eating à la carte is disappointing though. The risotto was simply disgusting.

There is one strong point about the hotel, which is the pool. It's a small pool, and it's heated, so it's not for you, if you are a swimmer and you want to do 1-2 hours of exercise, but it's a very nice place to jump into the water, especially in the evening, when Da Lat gets cool, and the warm pool water is exactly what you want.

The service is also nice, staff was very friendly, restaurant personnel was very attentive. The manager though, who seems so eager to comment here on tripadvisor seemed much less eager to ask the guests how they liked their stay. I could have told him all those things in person.

All in all... I have real difficulties to rate this place. It shows flashes of real nice ideas, and it could be a real gem, but you would have to change a lot. Starting with renovating the houses. And getting a garden architect in to do something about the compound.

As it is at the moment, I can't recommend it. The Ana Mandara is just not what it claims to be. And my belief in the brand name "Ana Mandara" is kind of shattered.

Room Tip: Ask for a villa as close as possible to the pool and restaurant area. The villas 24 and 26 are at th...
