Within less than four hours (door to door) from Hanoi, Cat Ba is a nice beach destination for a short 3-4 days trip away from Hanoi.
The pools and gardens are quite nice. The room is a little small. But overall it's an ok experience.
The town is just a few minutes walk away and has plenty of good food option.
Overall, i would recommend it for a long weekend.

Since there are not many choices of resort in Catba Island, I was hoping that the resort has their own private beach but they do not, there is a small beach right next to resort but share the entrance with locals, people on the beach also tried to charge us 80,000d/hour/beach/ chair, obviously these people are not under management of resort.

Other than that the room is OK, bit small, not very clean and has its balcony, the resort is big, two pools, one for adult and one for children, maybe the biggest one so far. Food are nothing more than standard, staff also need to pay more attention on guests.
I still suggest friends to stay at the resort, but eat out!

Booked online but found out that their rack rates were 50% lower. Very poor value for money, and very poor service. I guess just about ok if with small kids and just want to hang by the pool otherwise I'd stay in the main part of the town. Won't be going there again, worst experience of travelling through Vietnam. Took them 2 days to fix faulty toilet and shower!!

We stayed at this resort for one night as part of a package deal with our trip from Ha Long Bay. We were both initially just very pleased to be staying on dry land instead of the boat we had slept on the night before!
The venue is a nice resort in an excellent location. The resort is the closest one on the island to the two main beaches, and it takes approximately 5 minutes to walk into the main town.
The resort seemed to be quite busy which I take as a positive sign, as it's nice to see facilities like the pools being taken advantage on. We played tennis for a couple of hours on the court which was fun, but pricey at $15 USD to hire the rackets.
Rooms are okay - only 3 star quality though. Bathroom was a little dirty.
Staff actually had quite good English and were eager to help, despite the difficulty other people seem to have had.
Certainly the place has been neglected. THe railings of the balcony are rusted, some light fittings do not work, one tap was dripping in the bathroom and the waterslide was not functional.
However it still appears to be by far the best place available on this tiny island. If you come with expectations of a 3 star resort you will not be dissapointed I believe.
Overall I would not rate it 4 stars based on all the other places we have been to over the years, but it wouldn't stop me coming back here again.
Can't make any comment on room price unfortunately as it was included in our ture package

We decided on staying here after a particularly long day with limited net access. The pictures on Agoda and positive reviews made it sound decent enough.

- We called a member of staff to get a van to come and pick us up from the Jetty and were informed it would be half an hour away. We called 45 mins later to express that no van had been sent. Another 45 mins later a van arrived to get us. We were offered no apology for this at the hotel.

- We paid for 'Deluxe Ocean View' rooms and were given ground floor rooms which had a strong moldy odor. The hotel seemed almost entirely empty with no people other than ourselves in sight yet upon asking for rooms more in line with the high price paid, we were given 2 Deluxe rooms on the next floor up and 1 Superior.
The staff flat out refused to refund the difference when they could have easily given us top floor rooms that matched what we paid for without issue.

- After being given a broken room key, my travel companion went to reception and was told it was HIS FAULT that the key was broken and that he would be charged $10. He waited an hour outside his room while a member of staff broke in via the next door apartment balcony.

- The shower was lukewarm at best and the toilet didn't flush properly, running overnight. The lights had broken knobs and there were issues with the plug sockets not working.

- The restaurant took 20 minutes after we ordered to come and tell us that the particular large size pizza ordered was not available only small (a bad sign if ever there was one). This frozen pizza would have cost us $10 US

- Nearly all the facilities are in disrepair, the waterslides featured are not in service and badly in need of a coat of paint. The room facilities such as shower, toilet etc are dirty, substandard and the key point, completely unacceptable for even a 3 star hotel let alone a 4 star resort.

Some research has led us to find out that the hotel is run by someone living in Russia who only drops in once a year. The staff couldn't care less other than the poor guy at the restaurant seemingly surprised as we were that even basic food could not be covered. Even a map of town couldn't be provided.

Bottom line, DO NOT STAY HERE!

We booked 5 nights here by email from the website - which asks you for credit card info without confirming room availability. When we arrived without the reservation printout they had no record, made no effort to take names for the booking and inflated the price by $20 per night.
It is a beautiful place to stay though, and despite arriving mid-August it was almost eerily deserted, which meant we had the two pools mostly to ourselves.
The rooms are fine, one cockroach found on check in but scared off. The whole place has a strangely Soviet air, it seems to have been put up in a hurry and then not maintained - marks on the wall, broken waterslides, damaged balcony railings, and by night rather badly lit. We thought it might be a venue for government sponsored family holidays as the only other guests apart from a few Westerners were only Vietnamese families.
The restaurant served strange but quite nice Western ideas with Vietnamese ingredients, for about $6 a plate which isn't bad but pricey by local standards. The town us 2 minutes' walk down the hill for fresh seafood. Buffet breakfast was pretty rubbish given the quality if local ingredients - the pastries were defrosted which is a shame when the island has a perfectly good bakery
