“Unexpected visit”
Reviewed 19 February 2014 via mobile

An unplanned stay due to bad weather on Halong bay. We got a suite room which was bare and sparse, nice view and bathroom unfinished. Rooms were not sound proofed. Elevator took forever however they are in the process if adding a third, which created a cold draft throughout the building.
On the plus side, the staff were nice and menu needs some work. we had a good chat to the manager when checking out who was very interested in our feedback, so here's hoping it may improve!

We were at Royal Lotus as part of a tour group in September 2013. Check in was fairly quick and painless. Rooms and bathrooms are extremely spacious and views are spectacular. We found the beds very comfortable but quite firm. The closets had full length mirrors and plenty of room for handling clothes.
I tried the spa at night for a 'tranquility massage' (spa is open until 11pm) but it was more like a deep tissue massage. I had to ask the lady a few times to be more gentle but I'm pretty sure I still had bruises by the end. At one point during the massage, another spa staff member (lady) had entered the room and kept the door open while speaking with my masseuse. That generally doesn't happen in western spas so I found it a bit odd. Otherwise, the spa was gorgeous.
The rooftop patio/bar was fabulous with awesome views and gentle breezes. The staff was friendly and the drinks were very good.

It's a bright new hotel with amazing views but you can get bored after few days. Not much going on around hotel area.
+
1. Spacious room with modern deco;
2. Nice restaurant;
3. Welcome, professional and good English speaking staff ;
4. Good wifi;
5. Well stocked minibar;

-
1. Noisy and without any manners guests (very loud groups each morning)- not hotel fault directly but probably allocating people ' on the move' on different levels would help;
2. Surprisingly bathroom was getting old; Chips on tiles and wholes in the corners and missing parts on blinds;
3. Old towels and bath-matt;
4. Location; far from everywhere
5. Air con didn't work;

The staff was incredible - nice, supportive, always there. Last minute arrangement of an overnight bay cruise would not have been manageable without the help of the hotel's guest relation manager. She took so good care of us.
Our first room was far too cold. AC was not adjustable to December temperature. Same problem in the restaurants. We were moved to another room, a junior suite, where the heating was working. No problem to store luggage at the hotel for one day while we were cruising Halong Bay. When returning to the hotel, we were put in a room at top floor with a great view and working heating. Also in the restaurants and the lobby the temperatur was convenient then.

My Boyfriend and I stayed at the Royal Lotus in early January this year. Upon arrival after being on a 5 hour bus ride from Hanoi, the staff alerted us that the hotel had been over booked so they would have to upgrade us to a Suite room. Couldn't have been happier. The room was huge and everything worked perfectly. The room service was great and the hotel staff extremely friendly.

Not ready for massive tourism.
New hotel with only two elevators,
And strange smell in the room.
Be ready to wait for longtime.
Dissent size room, some with beautiful view.
Dissent breakfast. Service was ok
Location not great as well

I'm not sure if I liked this hotel so much because it was really that good, or I was just incredibly relieved to be off of the bus after a four hour drive at 30mph from Hanoi to Halong Bay. But nonetheless we had arrived, and were greeted by what seemed like twenty people on staff, in the lobby, all stating how delighted they were that we were there. It was really quite nice, albeit sorta crowded. Bags were delivered promptly to the room, and on first inspection of the room all I could say was "wow"! Huge, well appointed, nice restroom, flat screen, large picture window, and an incredible view.

We went up to the 15th floor rooftop bar for a drink and dinner before crashing for the evening and encountered a kind of overly lighted, pink and white low ceilinged room with the window shades drawn, and fairly loud music. Kinda reminded me of Japanese animation that you see on cable late at night when you can't sleep. However, as we ventured outside we discovered an outside rooftop dining area lined with tables and chairs at the perimeter, and somewhat more subdued than the interior. Awesome, we had landed.

Our orders were taken promptly, and then we waited.....and waited. It turns out that they have no liquor nor food upstairs at the bar, and have to cook and mix everything down in the kitchen, then bring it up in the elevator. Despite the long wait, it was quite good.

Included morning buffet breakfast was somewhat international, and not bad as buffets go. Good tea, bad coffee, excellent service. Somewhat typical of VietNam as a whole to my experience.

As this was an overnight stay before a Halong Bay cruise, we only made it for the one night before heading out, but I really wouldn't have minded hanging around for a day or two more. Great staff, terrific room, and more than ok food. I liked the place.

Would I choose this hotel again? Without question.
