“Nice staff, dismal rooms”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2010

The staff is nice, but the location is inconvenient, rooms are leaky and buggy, property was under construction and rundown.

We stayed here for a night during our Halong Bay cruise with Ocean Tours. Had an amazing stay. It is back-to-basics stuff, living in lil beach huts with minimal luxury.. but thats what made it so beautiful. Waking up to the tide coming in - it was so peaceful. We kayaked around to 'sunset beach' and if your able, I would definately recommend - it was so romantic watching the sun come down and it was only me & my partner on the entire beach - simply stunning. At night they put on a bbq for us and pleased to report the wine was cheaper than the boat (we took full advantage of this!) Staff we nice and polite, though we were basically left to our own divices, undisturbed - excellent :-)

ps - breakfast was awesome!

Do the Ocean tours two night Halong Bay trip - its worth every (bargain!) dollar!

we booked a 2 days tour with Ocean Tours in Hanoi in the Halong bay including a night on their private island rather than on the boat. I think it was the right choice since we had a nice room in a small bungalow with seafood bbcue and nice music. The resort has no power so they use generator from 4.00pm to the next morning, but this means no A/C. You hear the waves while sleeping, but you may also hear your snoring bungalow mate!
The island is small so not much to do appart from relaxing, sun bading and eating (beach volley court and 8 pool however). I recommend to visit Cat Ba island the next day (bicycle tour, natural reserve etc)

I'm still trying to figure out the target market for this beach resort. The privacy and seclusion of the resort on it's own island makes me think that the target is for couples. However, the non-privacy in the shared bungalows makes this non-ideal for any couples.

There are some very nice things about the resort. The resort is across from Cat Ba Island and offers a beautiful and private beach. The common area is comfy and good for meeting fellow travelers, the bungalows are rustic, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the food is good.

There are also some things that really turned us off about the resort.. I think everyone needs to know that you a sharing a bungalow - each bungalow has two separate rooms. It is basically a bungalow with a very, very thin bamboo wall separating the two rooms. You can hear the people in the other room walking, talking and using the bathroom. This is not exactly my idea of privacy.

The resort is also quite expensive. They charge per person which makes absolutely no sense since they are shoving you into a shared bungalow. If you want to make reservations, you need to wire the money to the management company. Wiring money internationally is pricey and makes it difficult to negotiate if you want a refund. The food at the hotel is also much more expensive than on Cat Ba Island. The resort offers a boat ride to Cat Ba in the morning and a return to the island at a set time. If you want to check out any restaurants/bars on Cat Ba, you'll need to arrange your own transportation back to the resort. Another added cost.

For all these reasons, we decided that we didn't want to stay the full three nights that we had paid for beforehand. There was a very loud couple in room adjacent to us in the same bungalow and we weren't getting any sleep. Working with the management company in Hanoi for a refund was extremely difficult and time consuming. They kept citing "policy" that they needed notice to provide a refund versus our overall unhappiness with the lack of privacy and the resort. In the end (after much haggling), we finally got a refund for leaving one day earlier.

I read a number of reviews before booking this place and surprised that most didn't mention the lack of privacy. If you are going with other couples and can share a bungalow, I think it would be a great place to spend a day or two. Also, they had some other bungalow options but they were not available during our stay. I don't think I would wire the money either -- no other hotels in the area have this requirement for making reservations.

As a baseline, I don't mind spending money for a nice resort -- but the amount paid for the room and food far exceeds what we received. We moved to a perfectly good hotel on Cat Ba for $10/night and there are plenty of good restaurant options much cheaper than the dinners we paid for at the resort.

In the end, this resort was not a good option for us.

During a three day trip, which we booked at Ocean Tours (the owner of this resort) in Hanoi, we spend two nights in this little ‘Bounty resort’, having a great time. Though the rooms look simple from the outside we were surprised by their nice-looking furniture, the electric blanket, the nice bathroom and the rocking chair. There’s hot water in the shower but be on time as it takes a while before there’s enough water heated again. There isn’t a lot to do, other than relax on the beach or kajak, on the little island of Cat Ong, just outside Cat Ba, but you can arrange some well-organized tours and there’s a free boat going to Cat Ba. The atmosphere at the resort is very relaxed, there’s a nice hang-out area, the beach is attractive and the food is great. I would definitely recommend it!

We stayed here at the Ocean Beach Resort for three nights as part of our honeymoon to Vietnam. It is truely beautiful and a real delight after the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and the cities. The resort is literally just a few huts on the beach with a lovely communal area with bar, pool table, restuarant and relaxing chairs. The beach is clean, and untouched with just a few shade umbrellas and sun beds. Kayaks are available free of charge.

The rooms are clean and beautifully presented with everything made from bamboo and natural materials. Each bungalow has two rooms and being only a thin wall between the two it can be noisy if you get snoring people in the next romm - so take ear plugs! Also the hot water is timed at certain parts of the day and it doesn't last long when it's on, so quick showers are needed. But that is all forgotten when you can fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the sea.

The restuarant is good, proabably one of the best in the area (Cat Ba town isn't great for authentic food). Breakfast is fantastic with lots of choice. The daily boat leaves the Cat Ong Beach resort island at 9am anbd returns at 4pm but if you miss these then water taxis are available from Cat Ba town.

This hotel is a little more expensive than others in the area but it's miles apart from the others so it's clear why. The staff are lovely and the manager is fantastic and so helpful. If you want to treat yourself to a comfortable beach hut experience on the peace and quiet of a private island, this is the place to go.

The resort is on Cat Ong island, across the water from Cat Ba downtown, just a short boat hop away. There is nothing on the beach apart from the 7 bungalows (each having 2/3 rooms) and the commons. Besides sunbathing and eating, the thing to do is to go on the water: canoeing, going to see the sunset on the other side of the island, going to fish, to visit the bay...

The personnel is young, courteous and efficient. Regarding food, we were disappointed by the soups (too much pepper) and by the dishes where the meat is wrapped in leaves, but not by the fruit juices and especially the barbecue dinner on the beach was exceptionnal (but the BBQ itself should probably be rebuild a few meters away). The bamboo huts integrate very well in the landscape.

The location is gorgeous. Being East means that the beach is on the mountain's shadow already at 15PM in winter. The management of the environment is where you see the difference between a $50/night resort (like Ocean Beach) and a $150/night luxury Club Med : the garbage dump can be seen (or worse, smelt) when walking from the pier to the common, the diesel generator can be heard. We would expect an island resort to be more "green": use solar energy, high efficiency appliances, conserve water, sort wastes...

Overall, this is a really good finding. Beachlife is so much better than sleeping in a small downtown hotel !
