“don't bother”
Reviewed 5 August 2009

I stayed here only because I was moved, rather abruptly and without reason, from another hotel around the corner. This hotel is dirty, full of roaches and void of any character at all. Don't bother. There are so many great hotels in the area for the same price.

I spent 5 days at the Amazon which has been recently refurbished. We had a superior room (front) room with a balcony (not really used - wet) room was comfy and serviced well every day. Fresh tropical fruit every day in the room, but alas no paper (as advertised). Single glazed windows let in a little noise even though we were on the 5th floor, so if your a light sleeper go a rear room. No rooms have been kept as "Non Smoking" which was a pain as we are both non smokers but smoking in Vietnam is VERY strong so you just have to accept it.
Buffet breakfast on the 6th floor was very basic and prepared well in advance, even the eggs instead of supplying them fresh on demand so you may look for a breaky spot out side.
Staff where very helpfull with the reception staff having very good english. Internet is availiable at the reception area and tours can be arranged, however, where we paid premium for a Halon Bay tour which is a group of less than 12 we found that the tours become combined at the boat with extra groups so its pointless to pay extra. The tour mini coaches aircon was "just broken" and the engine was overheating so a sweaty 3 hour run each way made a happy buda very unhappy. Note that the tour is not the hotels own but is there recommended. we only did the one tour with them.
The hotel is well located on Bat Dan road with a couple of good resturants 100meters to the left of the hotel as you walk out and Bia Hoi a further 50 meters past them. The "Main market" is only a 10 minute walk and "Sword lake" about the same distance the other way.
All in all the Hotel was OK

Highly recommend this hotel (I"d give it five stars, but I never give a hotel five stars). Good location, close to Hoan Kiem Lake, and the staff are exceptionally helpful. The room we had was relatively inexpensive -- no windows but we sacrificed the view for a better price -- and it was kept clean. Everything worked, which was a nice change from some of the places we've stayed at.

If you're on a budget and need a central place to stay with friendly staff, it's a graat option.

I was very surprise to read the last reviews as I also stayed with a friend at the hotel at this time and found the care we were giving above what was expected from the time we arrived at the hotel we had trouble with the taxi driver Thao paid him from his money to go away. He did organize some tours but we had already done our homework and the price was very good especially the Harlong Bay trip were on the same tour everyone else had paid alot more even a french couple had paid 3x times as much also I recomend the farm stay trip. also Thao gave us his mobile No if we had any problems and rang us in Hochimin as we travelled late to see we got to our Hotel OK I did see travelers not always give the respect to staff due to some lanuage difficulties but a bit of patience goes along way. So treat people the way you would like to be treated. You might think we had good service because we were young but as both over 50 and married I dont think so. So to Thao and all the staff thank you for a fantastic experience. P.S Hope Thao your leg gets better its hard when you have to stand all day and your in alot of pain.

Firstly, the good things about Amazon hotel; The location is excellent- right in the middle of the Old Quarter and just a short stroll to Hoan Kiem Lake. Bat Dan is a permeation Hang Bac- one of the main streets in The Old Quarter. The room was well priced and quite clean too with good wifi reception (Hanoi is drowning in free wifi). The elevator is usually fast and beats walking up those steep stairs. Most of the staff are friendly, although as you will read later one in particular really made the stay less pleasant. However, if you do stay here try and deal with Hieu, who is great.

Now, the bad; breakfast was not good at all- if it were not for the fact that there are very cheap bowls of pho on every corner we'd have gone hungry.
The main receptionist Thao (I think this is the spelling) was also a real problem. The hotel also operates as a travel agency, which is very handy, but we found Thao to be very pushy in trying to get us to book tours and onwards travel with him. The initial prices he offered were insulting and for the first two days we could not walk past the front desk without him accosting us. I understand that it is common for hotels to recommend tours, shops and travel options in Vietnam, however this was over the top. We booked some tours and a bus to Hue elsewhere and after this Thao was very sulky and sullen towards us (this was preferable to being accosted!).

Lastly, when we would leave the hotel, the staff would shut off the power to our air-con and TV- I am all for this practice as a green/economical measure, however several times they did not switch it back on and then denied turning it off in the first place. They blamed unreliable power to the building, however after a phone call to reception it magically came back on instantly. This happened 3 or 4 times and also occurred when my wife was still in the room. The next time I went put alone I had to tell Thao implicitly- do not turn off my wife's air conditioning.

So, the bad outweighed the good on this occasion- my advice is to find somewhere else as there are many hotels i this part of Hanoi!

After a long time of checking and consideration we decided to choose this hotel for our vocation. And we absolutely satisfied with our decision. The hotel was so nice with very big rooms. Specially there's a restaurant on the top floor where we had very nice buffet breakfast and take some tea or coffee during our staying. Everyone there treated us so well and helped us whenever we need anything.
We love this hotel and going to come back again. Highly recomended this hotel!

On the trip to Asia for business, we stayed in Amazon for 2 nights. The fisrt impression of this hotel was our room. It's very spacious with desk and wireless connection in room. We really needed that during our trip. On the other hand, its location was great because we could find many good restaurants and cafes nearby.
