I was so disappointed by this hotel. After having read the great reviews, we didn't think twice before booking, and even opted for a slightly nicer-than-usual room. But this hotel didn't miss any chance to disappoint or annoy us. I'm not at all sensitive to service quality but this was just terrible..

- Upon arrival we were taken to a room which didn't look like the room we booked. When I asked about it, I was told that "the room we booked ran out" and that this room was just as good, if not better. And that "there is no reason for you to like it less". It was hard to argue with that, so I let it go, even though it seemed inferior and I found it weird that they didn't even mention they were giving us a different room than agreed. After 2 nights in this room, we left for Halong Bay, and when we returned to the hotel, we got the room which we originally booked - only to discover it was much better: larger, with a balcony, with nice furniture and a mirror - all which the other room lacked. I felt absolutely cheated, and when we went to talk with the hotel manager, he clearly did not listen to us (based on his responsees which had nothing to do with the complaint), laughed repeatedly, and offered us "compensation" in the form of a bottle of local wine.. this naturally just added to the annoyance of the entire episode..

- Another unpleasant experience: the AC in our room wasn't working, so we called reception. They sent someone to come look at it: he felt it, showed me that there was air coming out (a very light flow of lukewarm air), laughed, and left. We ended up sleeping in a cold-ish room..

- The welcome dinner which was complimentary in our package was also a huge disappointment: We came at the agreed time, were told it is a set menu and will take about 10 minutes to arrive. We ordered drinks, and about 15 minutes later we got what we assumed to be the starters: spring roles and meat skewers. Both too oily to my taste but overall not too bad. As we were finishing our starter, the rice and vegetables arrived (about 10 minutes after!) - - turns out it wasn't a starter but the main course, and we had just finished it (practically). So that was the dinner.. Given the amazing food you can get in Hanoi for pennies, this was an absolutely wasted meal!

- Upon checking out, there was one last inconvenience for the payment: the invoice quoted one number for us to sign, but they wanted us to verbally agree for them to charge us more for credit card payment. They tried to claim this was the international standard of credit card payments everywhere (that the price changes between the invoice and the payment..??). At last they admitted this was indeed to cover a local charge, and when we insisted it is unacceptable at this point – had this been communicated in advance it would've been fine for us – they cancelled the additional charge. This was the right response but it didn’t come easy.

The rooms were nice, the location is good, but the disappointment and feeling of always being cheated – nearly ruined our holiday.

The Rising Dragon Palace was in an excellent location, close to fun places and yet quiet in the night. The rooms were nice and large, and were good for us to come back to after a long day out. The staff were great throughout. There were rooms with balconies, and I'd definitely recommend one of those. Very good overall.

Staff here were amazing. When we checked in we asked about splitting our nights to take a cruise in Halong Bay then return to the hotel. They easily accommodated this request and helped us book a wonderful cruise with Pelican cruises. There was a water problem so they moved us to a sister hotel the first night but even that worked out as it was closer to the lake and night market. Staff took care of us. Massage was good. Breakfast was filling with options.

If you're thinking about booking this hotel. Stop! Just book it.

The Rising Dragon Palace (especially having stayed in two other hotels in the same price range in Hanoi) offers the best price to value ratio in Hanoi.

Arriving extremely late in evening, we were warmly greeted by the reception start and offered a cold drink whilst waiting for the paperwork was being processed. Over the entirety of our stay the staff were extremely helpful and courteous.

The rooms are great and the location of the hotel is within easy walking distance of pretty much anything you might want to see in the Old Quarter.

Room Tip: Spring for a room with a city view

We stayed at Rising Grand Hotel with our 2 children in December and everything was very good. We decided to come back to the same hotel after our trip to Halong Bay.
Staff was very helpful, the bedroom was very clean and of good size. It has a computer with internet connection, which my children loved! And which was very helpful to transfer the photos from the camera to the flash.
Breakfast has a good selection.
The staff can also help you organise trips around Hanoi and guides will pick you up from hotel. I think all hotels in the area offer the same service but it is very convenient.
Overall a very good place to stay at a very reasonable price.
