Reviewed 30 December 2013

The Sheraton Hanoi is located next to West Lake, and fairly far away from the Old Quarters. The hotel was probably a grand property when it opened, but now it is a bit on the tired side. We had the unfortunate luck of staying there when John Kerry was visiting and the executive lounge was closed to normal guests (or SPG Diamond members). The staff tried very hard to compensate for this closure by offering drinks in the lobby during the day and oddly enough, a breakfast in a different restaurant than the main breakfast restaurant (seemed odd, and when we were there for breakfast we were the only people there – and the food took some time because it had to be cooked elsewhere and brought in – the hotel was probably better off just having us go to the main restaurant with all the other guests).

Getting There:

It takes about 35-40 minutes by taxi at a fixed rate of 350,000 VND to get here from the Airport (Approximately USD$17).

The hotel itself is a fairly large property, and is located next to West Lake. Walking out of the hotel, there are a several higher end “Western” restaurants on the street in front of the hotel, but hardly any Vietnamese restaurants other than the typical hole in the wall Pho places. We walked around looking for something that was middle of the road Vietnamese but didn’t see a lot of choices. The Hotel itself told us that good Vietnamese was a taxi ride away.

Overall – a functional hotel, but a taxi ride to the center of the city, and not a huge selection of restaurants that we could tell within walking distance. One positive is that it is fairly close to the Flower Market (that opens at 2AM and runs until morning) and we found the flower market experience to be well worth the visit.

Very good service
Outstanding buffet dinner
nice location by the west lake.
Large rooms with marble bathroom.
The water not hot enough for taking a good bath at the 15th floor.
Nice grounds with swimming pool; unfortunately it was too cold to use it at this time of the year .

Stayed twice during my stay in Hanoi. On the first visit, staff recognized my Gold status right away and upgraded me to a Grand Deluxe on a high floor. Room was very spacious and appears renovated as the bathroom looked new. The carpets were new although the furniture design looked outdated. There was a welcome bag of cookies as well and I was offered either Starpoints of a welcome drink as a Gold member gift. On the second visit, staff didn't seem to understand Gold members can get late checkout and kept giving the same technical rant that check-out before 6pm incurs a half day charge. After repeating myself several times in a clearly annoyed manner, they finally decided to call a manager and I got the lake check-out in 10 seconds. They decided to give me Starpoints instead of offering a welcome drink choice. While it is located far from the Old Quarter, a limited shuttle is available 3x a day, with the first one leaving the hotel at 9am. There are a few decent restaurants nearby and a huge supermarket at the Fraser down the street for souvenir shopping without the inflated prices. However, there are no sidewalks so be careful navigating with traffic.

I stayed here once for a wedding visit in Hanoi and several other times to enjoy their diverse menu buffet. Rooms were nice and clean, adequately equipped and well-kept, but furniture might have gotten pretty worn. Staff were professional, always smiling and very helpful. The hotel interior design could have been more cozy though.
Lakeside is the best possible location for a five-star hotel, great views outside the room windows morning or night. Away from the swarmed and noisy streets but not too far from the city centre. The surrounding areas are pretty well-off with many Western restaurants, bakeries and small supermarkets alongside secluded villas, which creates a great atmosphere.
I enjoyed my stay at the hotel and definitely would come back for their buffet.

Stayed here on business. Location is good, a bit off the busy roads and overlooking water. Room was clean, well maintained, staff was friendly and helpful. They're missing a proper bar, though you can order a drink in the lobby and perch on a large sofa. Breakfast and dinner buffets were quite good and a good value.

Having chance for short stay after haven't stayed here more than 3 years. Keep standard as 5 star hotel. Very friendly staff. Weather is very nice as early winter, not freezing yet. Clean and tidy except carpet is quite old.

The hotel has a HSBC atm. Per Citibank website, it looks like there are lots of citi atms around the hotel. That is not true. The hotel also exchanges money and the rate was btw 21020 through 21060 depending on the bills. You get more dong if you have $100 bills. Some taxis take credit cards. If you dont want $25 breakfast at the hitel, there is a french bakery right outside of the hotel. Make a right turn and it is right there. They open at 6:30am.
