We really enjoy our stay in Sheraton Hanoi. The hotel is good and the staffs are really nice.
We are so lucky to have Mr Thanh (the receptionist of the hotel) he gave us much information about Hanoi and his Japanese is good!!! We hope that we will see him again if we come next time :)

For western travelers, this is a home away from home. It has all the features you would expect from a name-brand hotel. Sure it is a stark contrast from the seemingly chaotic street life of Hanoi but after a busy day of dodging scooters, long bus rides or stressing out by trying to get by without knowing the language, the hotel is a welcome respite.

Staff is friendly and helpful as they try to make you - a stranger in a strange land - as comfortable as possible.

You have your choice of breakfast where you can choose between American style, European, Japanese, Chinese or Vietnamese. The bar downstairs is hard to find but the tapas and cocktails make the effort worth it. The nearby lake is perfect for a brisk morning walk to get your adrenalin going or a leisurely stroll in the evening without having to worry about the traffic.

I found the rooms to be clean and very comfortable. Comments about the furnishings being "tired" is because the design motif is French colonial, not contemporary Anaheim or Miami Beach. It is a distance from the Old Quarter but the street outside the hotel grounds has attracted a host of restaurants and mom-and-pop stores where you can interact with locals and enjoy their cuisine.

Room Tip: Ask for one facing the lake. They're quieter, too.

Location: to the North of the city centre, which depending on the traffic is a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride away. The hotel has its own -official- taxis always available, at normal city taxi rates, which is very convenient (you can even pay them with credit card for longer distances, e.g. from or to the airport). The good thing about this location is that most rooms overlook the lake, and there is no noise coming from the street, which is a real treat in a city like Hanoi. The hotel is located on the way to the airport (coming from the centre), so handy if you want to go to the airport from the hotel, without having to go through the hectic traffic in and around the city centre.
Premises: had a very new look and feel, though I was told that the building itself had been standing empty for some time (do not worry, you can't possibly tell that from what you see)
Room: well-equipped and with everything in good working order, with a very comfortable bed, and very large bathroom with both shower and bath
Breakfast: unfortunately there was no breakfast included in my rate plan, and I found that the price of the hotel's breakfast (18 USD) was really unacceptable for Vietnam. However, the excellent "Boulangerie Saint-Honoré" is a 100 metres away, where you can have the best croissants in Vietnam with top quality cappucino to match it, at very reasonable prices. It seems that it was the meeting place of the local expats in the morning.
Service: very efficient, friendly and helpful
Connectivity: there are internet PC's available in the lobby, but WiFi in the rooms is subject to a charge (dear Sheraton chain, when will this policy finally change?)
Gym: very modern and well-equipped; only downside is that there is only an outdoor pool with unheated water, which during the winter makes it unusable unless you have polar ambitions
Tip: the walk alongside the lake, in Northern direction, is worth the effort. If you are the sporty type, you can go all the way until you reach the excellent Italian "Da Paolo" restaurant which also overlooks the lake

We intended to send this months ago. Monika and I were at the Sheraton in September this year. We greatly appreciated the very special effort by Hoan, who managed to locate our missed bus to Halong Bay and also by helping to organise another flight to Hoi Ann when we had missed our flight. His help was invaluable. Thankyou and we will most certainly be back again, hopefully with our onward transport better organised.

Room Tip: update to superior room if offered, great value.

Our trip to Hanoi encountered an unexpected hick-up, with my husband requiring surgery for kidney stones. The hotel staff at the Sheraton were amazing - they found extended accommodation when the hotel was fully booked and whole heartedly welcomed me as family. Thank-you at reception Mr Bru Tean Nam, Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tien, Ms Thuy Nguyen and special Mr Ngugen Phuong at concierge you made our trip and surpassed any hospitality we have enjoyed during many years of travelling. The Sheraton has a well deserved reputation for its fine dining and breakfast banquet. Yes, it is away from the 'buzz' of the city - only $5.00 by taxi - but so lovely to return after a busy day of motorbikes and the noise of a bustling city - to an oasis of serenity, gracious charm, a staff who make you feel like a princess and of course all the facilities of 5 star resort.

The Sheraton Hanoi is located next to West Lake, and fairly far away from the Old Quarters. The hotel was probably a grand property when it opened, but now it is a bit on the tired side. We had the unfortunate luck of staying there when John Kerry was visiting and the executive lounge was closed to normal guests (or SPG Diamond members). The staff tried very hard to compensate for this closure by offering drinks in the lobby during the day and oddly enough, a breakfast in a different restaurant than the main breakfast restaurant (seemed odd, and when we were there for breakfast we were the only people there – and the food took some time because it had to be cooked elsewhere and brought in – the hotel was probably better off just having us go to the main restaurant with all the other guests).

Getting There:

It takes about 35-40 minutes by taxi at a fixed rate of 350,000 VND to get here from the Airport (Approximately USD$17).

The hotel itself is a fairly large property, and is located next to West Lake. Walking out of the hotel, there are a several higher end “Western” restaurants on the street in front of the hotel, but hardly any Vietnamese restaurants other than the typical hole in the wall Pho places. We walked around looking for something that was middle of the road Vietnamese but didn’t see a lot of choices. The Hotel itself told us that good Vietnamese was a taxi ride away.

Overall – a functional hotel, but a taxi ride to the center of the city, and not a huge selection of restaurants that we could tell within walking distance. One positive is that it is fairly close to the Flower Market (that opens at 2AM and runs until morning) and we found the flower market experience to be well worth the visit.

Very good service
Outstanding buffet dinner
nice location by the west lake.
Large rooms with marble bathroom.
The water not hot enough for taking a good bath at the 15th floor.
Nice grounds with swimming pool; unfortunately it was too cold to use it at this time of the year .
