“Best place I have stayed”
Reviewed 16 June 2010

My friend and I started our 6 week holiday in SE Asia at Hanoi Rendezvous. We booked from the internet so were slightly apprenhensive but could not have been more pleased. The staff are by far the freindliest we encountered, from offering to do our shopping for us, to inviting us to join them for dinner, organising all our excursions, and even hugs on departure. We checked out to spend 3 days in Sapa (organised by the staff) and when we returned to pick up our bags which had been stored we were given a room to sleep and shower in (free of charge).

Excellent location, right in the old quarter, incredibly clean rooms, great value and amazing staff. Highly recommended.

I travelled recently to Hanoi for business and some sightseeing. The Rendezvous was recommended by friends. The managers, Luke and Sarah, were incredibly helpful with booking my trips to Sapa and Ha Long Bay, recommendations, logistics (very helpful!) and generally very friendly. My room was spotless, crisp sheets, lovely bathroom, and i felt that the staff took great care with finishing touches. I arrived late and was welcomed by friendly staff. I enjoyed that the hotel had some local 'flavour' , great location and with two Australians in charge all was efficient and charming . Great hotel, 5 stars. Will stay there every time

At the time that we booked the hotel (April 2010) it was #7 of the Hanoi hotels in Trip Advisor and less than 2 months later, writing this review, it's rated #48. I think that speaks for itself. We had two very different experiences at this hotel, the first being okay and the second was terrible.

Impressions of our first stay were mostly positive. The location isn't the greatest but the staff do their best to help (but their English is VERY poor). The decor of the rooms was a good standard and we were impressed that the hotel published the minibar prices at the front of the fridge unlike anywhere else that we had stayed. We had some washing done, some of which came back even dirtier!!

Their "famous" breakfast is definitely overrated. It is nice, and there is a lot of choice, but it's really apparent that they've cut costs - the OJ is diluted to within an inch of it's life, you get one measly rasher of bacon with your bacon and eggs, the fruit couldn't be cut any thinner and so on...

When we checked out, we were heading to Sapa and they have a toilet/shower room at the back of the kitchen that guests can use before taking the overnight train. They even gave us fresh towels which we really appreciated and thought was a nice touch. The bathroom was very dirty, but a shower is a shower! We were coming back to the hotel in the few hours between our Sapa and Halong Bay trips to change our bags and the staff offered to let us have showers, have some breakfast... We were very impressed!

When we came back from Sapa at 6am, we'd told the staff and they assured us that the reception was 24hours. That's a bit of a lie! The taxi driver didn't want to leave us as all the lights were off and there was a bike lock chained to the front door. We didn't have a choice though as our bags were inside. So we banged on the doors and after a while, the guy sleeping on the camp bed in the reception area got out of bed, unlocked the door and let us in. We told him we were collecting our bags so he got straight back into bed without uttering a word. So we were left to find our bags and switch them, which we had to do in the corridor as there were 5 other staff members sleeping in the breakfast area. We were a bit shocked.

The hotel is definitely losing custom as even in those early hours, there were a fair number of people, laiden down with backpacks, peering into the unlit hotel reception seeing someone sprawled out on a camp bed. A guest even came down at 6.30am to collect his washing and had to rewake the guy on the bed. Clearly the promise of a shower didn't stand. When we walked to a nearby cafe, every other hotel was open.

So when we came back to the hotel for our second stay, we were a bit apprehensive but as we weren't arriving early in the morning, we didn't give it much thought!!

Sadly, on our last day, we both got a very nasty vomitting bug. And when you're face to face with the bathroom fittings, you realise just how dirty they really are. The bathroom was only surface cleaned and was VERY dirty. My partner was so sick that we were contemplating seeing a doctor so I went downstairs to speak with the Western owners. I was told they weren't available (fair enough) but the English was so poor, the Vietnamese staff just didn't understand.

Checking out was another eye opener - we left at 7am (not too early) but again, all the hotel staff were still sleeping in the breakfast area! Surely they must have homes to go to??! We tried to tell the hotel staff what we had taken from the mini bar but again, they didn't understand so we ended up paying for only one drink as there are only so many times you can try to say "3 drinks".

I know that I've written a long review but this really was a dreadful experience that we just wouldn't want to repeat and we didn't have these problems at the other hotels we stayed at in Vietnam.

This hotel is amazing! Especially for the price, I would expect to pay a lot more money for such a lovely place- that is what I felt after 04 nights. Spotlessly clean room, which was decorated with flowers, air con and nice shower!
Would recommend to anyone, couples, families... You must stay here!

Rendezvous is in a central location within easy walking distance to most places. The manager Sarah, was very helpful. She offered to book our Ha Long Bay Trip for us at no extra charge. We were able to leave our big back packs at the hotel while we went on our Sapa Trip which was very handy. They even sell Vegemite on toast in their restaurant which we thought was great! Rendezvous is a great place to base yourself at when traveling around the top of Vietnam.
