Owner description: "Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality.

This is for people who are curious and interested in the culture of Vietnam, or traditional music but don't know much about it. It might not be for people who don't usually enjoy those things, nor for people who are specialised. Personally I found it very educational. The music was good (apart from the drumming man which was quickly gotten rid off, to my relief). The explanations were very good. We had a small tea break where we were offered a small cup of strong Vietnamese tea. And at the end of the performance we could try ourselves at the instruments, which was fun. The room is very small so there are only a dozen people watching the performance. I might have liked to see more of the traditional dancing and get some explanations about that too. I'll just add this is not a real performance as the goal clearly is to teach people about Ca tru's existence.

I wanted to take my 2 teenage children to a cultural experience - which it certainly was. It was advertised as being 1hr in duration, it went for 1hr 20mins - probably 40mins would have been enough. The first 40mins we enjoyed - nice to hear the cultural music, there was a break and we got to have a go of the instruments and there was tea and biscuits. The last 40mins was mainly just music - the kids got a bit over it as to us each song sounded quite similar.
Still an interesting experience

We saw two puppet shows and have to say that this place was the best by far and at such goo value as well. The stories of old folk tales from Vietnam were fascinating. Tip it may be useful to read up on some of these tales before the show as you will get more out of it (the whole show is in Vietnamese). We were lucky in that we had a tour wth Hanoi Kids which talked us though some of the tales.

Besides my son blocking his ears when the women sang and getting restless after 15 mins it was entertaining as far as puppet shows go, especially as it was in water.
