Number one on Trip Advisor and no question about it!
Beautiful place in a fantastic location in Hanoi's Old Quarter. Clean and spacious rooms are bright and cheerful with huge security lockers. Clean bathrooms with hot showers are in the rooms.
The rooftop hang-out is really nice. Free breakfast is provided (toast, eggs, fruit and coffee/tea) and also between 6pm and 7pm free beer! Lovely food in beautiful surroundings.
The staff are probably the best thing about the place, though. Mike, the owner, treats you like a superstar and is always happy to help out. Their tour booking service is brilliant. I booked my Halong Bay tour and Open Bus tickets through them and found out I had paid a lot less than others I met on the same tour and bus.
Really fantastic place I will certainly return to.

I used Hanoi Hostel 1 as a base to explore Northern Vietnam. The service was what kept me coming back--the owner and his staff are very helpful and really enjoy helping guests with travel advice. They were so personable it was wonderful to just chat with them as well! The dorm rooms are cheap, clean and comfortable--they are cleaned on a daily basis. Each bed has a large locker where you can lock all of your luggage. The dorm rooms are not locked from the outside, but it doesn't matter as there's always someone at the reception area to prevent any intruders from coming in. Be aware that it's a long and narrow flight of stairs up to the rooms and there's no elevator. Free luggage storage is offered. A simple breakfast of fresh fruit, toast, eggs, and coffee/tea is included and is offered on the rooftop every morning. I booked the 4-day, 3-night Halong Bay tour ($95) through the hostel and it was just great--good food, nice accommodations, and great guides. The location is just right, close to the lake as well as the museums. Though it's in bustling Old Hanoi, the noise from the street never bothered me. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Hanoi Hostel again.

We stayed at this hostel for 2 nights, everything was perfect. Clean, the bed is comfortable, it is in the old quarter, so walking distance to everywhere, internet connection, A/C, hot water, the staff are helpful. They have free beer at 6-7pm. Just for information since this hostel on the roadside it will be little bit noisy, you will hear people talking, cars, cars beeping, so if you someone will sleep in very quite situation do not choose this hostel. Since most of houses at Hanoi is very narrow and at least have 4 floors, so this hostel is small and you must climb most of the time, they have roof top restaurant at 4th floor, you will have your breakfast there, the breakfast was great too.

We visited Hanoi for my birthday trip and Hanoi Hostel was a pleasant introduction to the city. We had a feel of both Hanoi Hostel 1 and Hanoi Hostel 2. Here's my take on them:

Hanoi Hostel 1:
1. Cute little hostel. Unassuming on the outside, cozy on the inside.
2. Lovely dorm room. We went for the girls dormitory. The bathroom was clean, the beds were deep sleep inducers. All for USD5. Mad.
3. When we were there, the building right next to the hostel was going through some renovation but you're in Hanoi especially the Old Quarter, noise is just something you can't escape from.

Hanoi Hostel 2:
1. Not as cozy as Hostel 1 but we much prefer the location of this one.
2. We took the private room and it is a bit on the cold side i.e. lack of character. But hey, who's complaining much? As long as it is super clean, I am alright.
3. Tons of eating options outside and there are more things to see in this part of the town. Not so far from Hostel 1 either.

We even booked our Halong trip and transport to Sapa through them and they did their best to accommodate to our requests. The free WIFI was very much welcomed too. Won't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone who asks.

This place is a real gem. The staff are excellent, friendly, and so very helpful. We stayed in the 8 share dorms and the beds were the comfiest we have slept in for a very long time. The hostel is great value for money, and with free beer served between 6pm and 7pm on the roof terrace, as well as the free breakfast you just can't go wrong.

You won't be disappointed if you stay at this great little hostel in the old quarter.

this place is really great - the staff is extremely helpful and fair, the rooms are clean and not smelly, the breakfast is very good and for free (on the roof top), the place has character, the internet connection is fast (and there is no problem accessing facebook). the owner speaks very well english and french. this is by far the best place i have stayed at in vietnam so far and i can only recommend it.
