“Cheap, good location, free beer, not the cleanest or newest”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

First of all, there are 2 Hanoi Hostels, so double check where youre staying at although both are just a street away from each other. My gf and I stayed at Hang Vai in a 8-bed mixed dorm.

The good:
+Very cheap
+Free beer (only in Hang Ma though, and beer is dirt cheap in Vietnam anw)
+Good location (its in the old quarter, a few hundred meters north of hoan kiem lake)
+Lockers provided under bunk beds and beside each bed
+Surprisingly one of the best beds I slept in throughout Vietnam. Clean and very comfortable!
+Staff were helpful and arranged for our pre-dawn taxi to the airport for us
+Breakfast was made to order

The bad:
-One of the guests in our dorm lost cash. Despite locking the dorm door before leaving, someone had gone through her bags.
-Hostel was quite old and run down tbh but I guess you get what you pay for. Lockers were dusty and some were broken.
-The dorm's attached bathroom was quite dirty, but worse, the shower was no good. You could only choose to have hot water or strong water pressure, but not both at the same time. Quite a dilemma during our stay in winter

If you like smaller, cozier hostels with friendly staff who remembers your name and is always ready to help, this is the place for you! For six dollars a night, you get a nice bed in a dorm, a good breakfast and one hour of free beer every evening. I stayed four nights in the 8-bed female dorm. Despite it being a little small, it was clean and comfortable and had an en suite bathroom, with a nice hot shower. Location is also good, right in the middle of the Old Quarter, with many good places to eat near-by. I would definitely stay here again!

We love staying in Hanoi Hostel for the 3 days and yes, we will definitely stay here again in our next visit to Hanoi.
All of the staffs here are friendly, helpful and can speak good english.
Hanoi Hostel offers us a simple, healthy but yet filling breakfast every morning, which includes of Homemade banana jam ( our favorite), free-flow toast, coffee & tea , fruits.
the hotel offers us free showering even though we did not stay overnight there for the first night, we really appreciate it.
The staff even gave the only kettle in the hotel to us to cook our instant noodle in the midnight 12 o'clock.
The hotel is good, the staff are excellent, it is definitely good value of money.

I loved everything about this hostel. The rooms are spacious and brightly coloured, the staff are soooo great and there is a roof top terrace serving free tea and coffee all day, and free beer in the afternoon! The breakfast is prepared (it was when I was there anyway) by a quiet but adorable lady who serves eggs, bread, fruit, banana jam (trust me, SO good with eggs). It's situated among the winding streets of Ha Noi, close to everything you need. When leaving, turn left, then right onto a main road to find some amazing fruit stalls.

Hi everybody, this is the feeling of a french traveller in Hanoi Hostel of Hang Ma Street.

A really good place cheap and friendly. The staff is really nice and help you to book some tour for Along Bay or else. You meet easily others travelers alone or with a group during the day, especially at the happy hour (free beer on the roof ;) )

The location is ideal, in the old city, you can do everything to walk. So just one word, reserved your room here.

Nice hostel, with super nice and friendly staff. I didn’t really asked for recommendations but the girl at the reception just started to tell me a lot and give me nice recommendations for restaurants and places to go. They really care about you. The rooms were a bit small and could have been cleaner, also the lockers were hard to close. The roof terasse is really nice and they offer free beer so you can meet people. The breakfast is also there and it’s probably the best free breakfast I had in a hostel in Vietnam! Toast with banana Jam (very nice!), Omelet, fruit plate. Free coffee and tea the whole day. Nice location.
