I recently stayed that this hotel and have to say that it was a diamond in the rough of Hanoi. I have been to Hanoi twice and had various issues, so to have such friendly and nice staff compared to what i was experiencing out on the street it was really great.
Reception team was great, the tour organizer sitting at the desk at the lobby was very nice, and the girls in the breakfast lounge were extremely pleasant i have to say. Cannot fault them.... its this type of genuine care which is really great.
We upgraded to rooms that looked out into the very busy street and these were spacious and the bath tub / shower thing is like stepping into a space ship! The toilet was a little cramped however and the noise got loud from the street of course. On the day we were leaving, there was a funeral down the street.... the music was blaring from just after 6am.
My problem was trying to pay by credit card. There was an extra 3% 'bank charge' applied. I have lived in Vietnam for over 2 years and i know this is a common practice of small businesses to cover costs, but its really not acceptable. The actual charge from the bank may not be exactly 3%, but thats the cost of doing business in my opinion. The other reason its common practice for small business to do this is so that you pay cash, therefore not running the money you pay 'through the books' so it goes to the owners pocket. This was compounded by the fact that i could not get Hong Kong dollars exchanged ANYWHERE in town.... i went to 4 banks an money changers and they did not accept it.... so how can i pay with cash if there is no where to exchange money?
