There were 6 of us who went on the tour. The tour was fun, we sampled 4 places for small eats and ended the tour in a coffee shop. We had thought that we would be shown more places and dishes. The tour lasted about 4 hours with a lot of chatting time. The charge was per head, which was quite expensive. It would be more appropriate to charge by the hour plus the food and travel cost per person. We did get a discount of $5 out of $55 because of the group size, it was just too expensive, we could have just followed some travel guide to hunt down some places to eat ourselves.
Our chef/guide seemed to have checked out part way through our tour. One of the people in our group did make a rather insensitive comment that implied Hanoi still behind the times, I wouldn't blame him that that made him disinterested in our tour. Most of the time, our guide just walked in the front of the group chatting with one person and didn't remember to give the rest of us much information about what we were seeing. I was rather disappointed of the experience.

If you're looking for great street food, the Hanoi Cooking Center 'Street Eats' tour is an excellent choice. Our guide, Y, was very knowledgeable about various types of foods and how to prepare them. He took us to 5 or 6 different locations to try various traditional vietnamese dishes. He was very flexible and always offered us choices (pork, beef or vegetarian). We also had beer, coffee and desert! We are completely stuffed!

At $55USD a person, it is a little steep, but it definitely takes the worry and mystery out of street food. I'm not sure if you eat $55 worth of food, but when you consider you are paying for your guide and taxis, its worth the money. Our guide not only talked about food, but answered quite a few questions about Hanoi and Vietnamese culture which we appreciated. His english was fairly good, and we each took turns learning new words from each other's languages. He was extremely friendly and even gave us free gifts at the end.

Next time we're back in Hanoi, we may try to sign up for his cooking course which sounds delicious as well. If you're not on a budget, this street eats tour is definitely the fastest and most worry-free way to experience the food culture of Hanoi. Make sure you bring a good pair of walking shoes, a hat, and your appetite!

My wife and I cook a lot - together. But never Vietnamese. So we did this half day cooking school to learn the basics. Starts with a market walk, then back to the kitchen to prepare 3 dishes, then we ate our creations. They were surprisingly fantastic! The whole class goes from 9.00 - 1.00 then lunch. USD$55 / head. The kitchens are clean, the instructor speaks English and we learned the basics of Vietnamese cooking - which is very easy and very tasty. Returned home and had a dinner party the following week and fed 12 impressed friends.
