This is the best hotel I've ever stayed at-- and in my long-winded way I'm going to tell you exactly why... from the moment we first walked into this place, we were treated with so much kindness and warmth from the staff...we knew that we had made the right choice for our Hanoi accommodations.
We were greeted at the front desk by Mary, and the manager "Johnny" was there as well. After we finished registering, Johnny sat down with us in the lobby to show us a map of the area and answer any questions we had about things to do while in town. He made some good suggestions about some possible side trips we were considering...not trying to steer us in any particular direction, but just providing advice about what was most feasible for the amount of time we had.
We were a bit early for check-in, but they said that we could use one of the vacant rooms to shower or take a nap if we needed, while they were preparing our room. We told them that wouldn't be necessary, so they then invited us to relax in the cafe downstairs, use the wifi, help ourselves to fresh fruit and beverages, etc.
When we got to our room later, we were definitely pleased. In fact, I can't think of anything bad to say about the room. It was spacious, fresh smelling, super clean, and stylishly appointed. There were a few bottles of complimentary water provided, as well as a plate of assorted fresh fruit. The air con worked perfectly (very important with Hanoi's hot weather and bad smog). The windows were nice and thick so we really didn't hear any noise outside at all. The water pressure in the shower was good and the temperature consistent. The bed was comfortable...there was plenty of storage for our luggage etc...there was even a computer in the room for internet. Yep, the room was great...but it didn't even matter anyway because they were so nice to us! They always wanted to know what we had been doing when we came back in from exploring the city. And they genuinely seemed interested in us...not just brown-nosing...they treated us like good friends.
Kate at the tour desk helped us book some train tickets to Hue, and recommended that we stay at their sister hotel there, the "Holiday Diamond", which as it turns out is also ranked #1 on Trip Advisor... and for good reason-- these people just know how to run a great hotel business. All other hotels should follow their example! It's not complicated...all you need to do is CARE, which they clearly do...and they deserve infinite success because of it.
I could go on and on and on about all the nice things they did for us...and you know what, I think I actually will...
Sophie, another one of the front office ladies, arranged for some rental bicycles to be brought over for us. When we went on our train trip, they sent a bellhop/doorman on his motorcycle to follow our cab to the train station, so he could make sure that we got situated in our sleeping car. On arrival in Hue, they had someone waiting for us at the station to take us to our hotel. When we returned to Hanoi for one more night at the Charming 2, they had upgraded us to their best room...it had a giant balcony overlooking the neighborhood, and there were flower petals on the bed. Our train had arrived at 5 am so we were pretty worn out. No hotel has a check-in time that early, but they very graciously offered us a temporary room once again to shower and nap, which made all the difference in how we felt for the rest of the day. The cheerful girl who worked in the cafe always made us smile with her loud enthusiastic spirit.
Did I mention also, that the location is great...
and the price for all this was like nothing. I know everything in Vietnam is pretty cheap, but so often you get what you pay for.
We have never experienced service and comfort like this anywhere, even for 5-10 times the price.
Thank you CHARMING 2 for making our stay in Hanoi so enjoyable!!!
