I recently stayed at Hotel de l'Opera in Hanoi for 4 nights. Despite some negative reviews from other users, there was nothing I could fault the hotel or staff for.

All the staff from reception, restaurant to house-keeping were friendly and helpful. The room was quiet with black out curtains - I had no disturbing noise from the inner courtyard, and the bed, typical of this hotel group, was like sleeping on a cloud.

The hotel is located on a busy street location, so I would recommend having a courtyard room rather than one facing the street. As in any main city, there may be traffic noise although I didn't have any problems.

The food was amazing - a wide choice of western and Vietnamese dishes for both breakfast and dinner.

I definitely recommend this hotel when staying in Hanoi. Loved the decor - very theatrical and dramatic and an interesting change from the usual bland hotel design. Generously sized toiletries are provided in the bathroom.

Room Tip: I had a courtyard room which was quiet.

When we arrived at the hotel we thought- wow. The staff were very friendly, our deluxe sweet was a slice of luxury, and the location (you can see the opera house from the terrace by the pool) was excellent. The bed was the comfiest I've ever slept in. We were impressed by the cocktails and the breakfast. You can order from the a la carte menu and go to the buffet (where the honey runs out from a huge piece of honeycomb!). Everything was delicious.
However, one thing really let it down for me. I was so excited to do a proper workout at the gym after not going for weeks due to travelling. However, the air con was at a constant 24 degrees!!! I asked them to make it colder, and they turned it down but didn't actually make it colder at all (we found the same in our room). This basically meant I couldn't really work out properly, was pouring with sweat and felt physically sick. A gym should be 18 degrees max, and the fact that I asked them to make it colder and they didn't succeed is just not good enough for a hotel of this calibre.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend it (just stay out of the gym).

Stayed here for 2 nights and booked two rooms.

Pros
1.Delicious made to order breakfast station (pho, crispy Vietnamese vegetable/pork pancakes, dessert crepes, omelette)
2. Spacious room
3. Very comfortable bed. I know some reviewers complain its too high, but that didn't bother me a bit and I'm not a tall person
4. Pillow menu
5. Nice locale near the opera house
6. Clean!!

Cons
1. Spotty Internet that fleets in and out
2. One bathroom sink-Can be very inconvenient and yukky when you have two people sharing the room
3. Thin walls. We could hear movement above us and every door slamming by the hallway outside our room.
4. Not enough bath towels provided for two people--You have to request if you want additional ones.

We stayed here for 1, 1 and 2 nights respectively during our trip to north Vietnam. It was superbly organised with efficient friendly staff and central location. The rooms are brilliantly appointed and nothing is too much trouble. Food could not be faulted and the restaurant has both set menu and a la carte which caters for all tastes and it is not over- priced. The swimming pool and gym on the third floor are welcome relaxation areas for tourists and business people. The beds are sublime with unrivalled linen.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard facing room as apparently the street facing ones could be noisy.

We stayed here for 5 nights in July and highly recommend this hotel.
For starters, the staff are exceptional. The concierge are efficient, friendly and seem to genuinely care for their guests (and their experience of the hotel and Hanoi).
Reception are very professional and incredibly helpful.
The restaurant and bar staff are attentive, friendly and provide service above and beyond!
Housekeeping are also efficient and incredibly friendly. Basically, every member of staff we passed in this hotel were friendly and attentive - which is rare indeed!

Our room was clean, tidy and well appointed. There were no signs of wear and tear and all appeared as new.

The breakfast buffet was wonderful value and allowed for a great range of tastes.
Wifi was fast and the pool was the perfect place to refresh after a day in the streets!

I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Hanoi!
