Hanoi Hibiscus Hotel

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 October 2013

Dear all,
Me and my cousin went to Hanoi for the weekend. We booked the hotel in advance and due to the plane delay, we arrived quite late (minight). We booked Hibiscus for 2 nights. The person welcoming us first announced that the room had a problem and that we couldn't sleep in the hotel, so he took us to another hotel 20m from there. A basic room and terrible bathroom (blocked sink and unclean toilet-bathroom). The next day we asked to the manager if we could move our stuff to Hibiscus and she said that the room might not be fixed and that we might have to sleep again in the other hotel... For us, no way that we stayed one more night there so we asked them to fix the room for the night or we would find another hotel. By this time, the other hotel where we slept the night before was already asking for money (450.000vnd, same price that the Hibiscus hotel we booked) against our passport, so no discount, nothing for the trouble caused. We had no other choices to pay in order to have our passports back and the freedom to leave if the Hibiscus room was not fixed.
As the Hibiscus hotel wanted us to stay the following night, they called us all day long because they wanted us to move our luggages in their room (and "now" as they said), promising that the room will be fixed, so it was very annoying to be harassed on the phone while we were visiting business partners. When we came back in the evening, everything was apparently fixed and someone else from Hibiscus came to us asking for the money of the first night (the money that we gave already in the morning to the other hotel) so very inconvenient from them to ask that at that point. We were already very negative about this hotel.

I don't know if the other reviews are talking about the same manager, but the one we saw, a girl, was very impolite, always cutting our sentences to say "Can you listen to me now.." which is very rude from a manager's point of view. Moreover she was always repeating the same nonsense sentence which is that as we booked a room at their Hibiscus hotel, they have a room for us (which was impossible to use when we arrive, and they didn't tell us at all before we arrived). In the end we had to pay the same amount for the second night (450.000vnd). No discount for the trouble caused, and no compensation at all. The manager was not understanding at all, she just wanted her money and didn't care about her reputation. Very incompetent !

So my opinion about Hibiscus hotel: AVOID IT!
Bad management, impolite people, bad service. And I am wondering how they did manage to get their excellence certificate 2013 because they don't deserve it at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they have paid people to write reviews...

We first came to the Hibiscus after taking a tour of nearby Sapa, organised by Lily, the manager who also works across the street at the Green Mango Tours portion of the hotel. The tour was fantastic (both as an experience and in value), and if you are planning any local tours, I would highly recommend booking them through Lily, who could not have been more helpful. The hotel was very modern and clean, and a very enjoyable breakfast was included in the price (which included both Western dishes and Vietnamese classics). It was by far the nicest place we stayed in Hanoi (and probably most of Vietnam), and if you are doing the trip on a budget (a room is $20), then this place is perfect.

I first met Lily at Green Mango Travel (across the road from Hibiscus) to schedule a couple of tours and travel arrangements across the country (and another into Laos).

Let me say, first, that Lily is amazing and will help you out with ANY need you have in Vietnam, and particularly local areas like Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay.

The hotel has clean, large rooms that are right in the smack-middle of what's going on in central Hanoi. Thanks Lily for being an incredible help to my family and I!

We spent some time in this hotel and were very happy with the room and the staff. In a very nice car free street with lots of shops and restaurants, but just outside the most busy streets of the area, without the constant horns of the scooters. Especially convenient was the fact that we could leave our big luggage here while we went on 2 tours to Sapa and Halong Bay.

My sister and I stayed in Hanoi for 5 days (July 2013) and Hanoi Hibiscus Hotel was our home away from home. Rooms were very clean, beds were comfortable and bathrooms were bigger than we've had elsewhere, were western, and soap, toothbrushes etc. we're all provided. Staff were amazing and friendly, being the highlight of our stay and were always willing to help if a problem ever arose. When our air conditioning broke midway through our stay, we were moved to another room straight away.
Breakfast was available and always satisfied with fruit, omlettes, yoghurt and tea! The staff did not push tour sales at all but were very accommodating when we enquired and they were extremely helpful in recommending places to visit, eat and telling us how much we should expect to pay for things in the markets etc. so we were not paying too much. I will be coming back to Hanoi Hibiscus Hotel, even if just to visit the staff again! I loved every minute of my stay and it made for a great introduction to overseas travel.

Stayed here for a night after a very tiring halong bay trip. Needed a relaxing time and Hibiscus provided this, with everything required; wifi ,a comfy bed, tv and air con. The gem in its crown however is the smiling delight commonly refered to as Lily! She is enthusiastic in all that she does and helped us with whatever we needed, all-round great woman!

The best quality of this hotel apart from the location is the cleanliness and the fact that it is new and well maintained. Quiet hotel, well located, close to restaurants, other hotels near the St. Joseph Cathedral, 10 minutes from the lake. AC, LCD TV with English channels, wi-fi in the room and very good, mini bar, bathroom with shower and hot water 24 hours. We had electrical problems that were soon resolved. Provided fluffy and scented towels and toilet paper, soap, toothbrush, comb, shower cap. Breakfast at US$ 3. Big room and big and good bed. Brand new and well decorated. Clean. Enjoyed it very much and recommend. We stayed three days. We visited many in the region and was one of the best.Staff is very good and cooperative. We paid $ 18.50 / 370,000 VND for a double room with bathroom.
Cons: our room had was 408 and we had a toilet smell in the room. The windows is too small and did not provide enough ventilation to take the smell away.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first and choose one que does not smell. Our room was at the back and we did not...
