“First class service and location at a great price”
Reviewed 20 January 2012

As our first stop in Vietnam The Essence hotel began our holiday in style. Great location to experience the hustle and bustle of the Old Quarter, whilst inside the hotel the atmosphere is tranquil and quiet. The staff are welcoming and helpful, but not intrusive. The restaurant provided good food at fair prices, convenient for our children who were tired from travelling. The buffet breakfast was enjoyed by all. The interconnecting rooms are great for families with the laptop and free wifi an added bonus. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Hanoi. It is clean, spacious and has an excellent dining area. We also made great use of the computer which is in every room. The travel agency is another fantastic asset. Apart from the hotel features and the terrific location the best feature of this hotel is the friendly staff who are most obliging and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Pham Thi Tam organised much of our remaining travel arrangements, with patience, profesionalism and a smile. Everyhing was organised superbly and ensured a brilliant holiday. The staff in the restaurant were sensational and the food was delicious. We ate in the restaurant each night.
Staying at the Essence was the best choice that we made. Thank you to all of the friendly staff at the Essence. Your hotel is 10 out of 10!!
Gillian and John. Two very happy Aussies!!

My wife and I, and 2 friends, stayed at the Essence for 3 nights over 14-17 January (one night off on a junk - see review of IndoChina Junk Co.). It was diificult to finad any fault with our stay there. The staff were exceptional, especially Tam who looked after us in a number of situations. They were friendly and efficient, and reception staff in particular spoke good English.

As an example, we had a situation where we were not happy with the massage given by Spring Fragrance (see separate review), who had been recommended by the hotel. When we mentioned this to Tam, she phoned SF immediately, spoke to the manager and passed on his/her explanation to us. She had also asked for more information on one aspect that the manager couldn't comment on at the time, and this was relayed to us later. That evening, we also had a call from the manager offering to meet us at the hotel to explain further and (I assume) offer an apology. We said this wasn't necessary but appreciated the offer, but it was an indication of the extent of the follow up by the hotel, as they felt partially responsible for recommending SF in the first place.

We also had to make changes to our plans a couple of times, and taxis/wake up calls were all handled without any fuss.

As the hotel is very new, the facilities are in excellent condition and spotless - everything worked, the showers were fantastic, wifi access reliable, good sized tv and room in general, the bed was firm and comfortable. On one night, we had a party of drunken Canadians (who else would sing the Canadian national anthem at midnight?) in the adjacent building, which spoilt the serenity somewhat, but otherwise we weren't aware of any external noise - something of a rarity in most Vietnamese hotels.

The hotel is in the old quarter and very close to a large range of shops and restaurants, and a few minutes from the lake. The breakfast was excellent, with a buffet selection complemented by a choice of omelettes. They also had possibly the only jug in Vietnam with a spout, so we could pour hot water into the strong Vietnamese coffee without spilling it everywhere.

Overall, we were delighted with our stay at the hotel, and although it was a bit more expensive than other hotels we stayed at ($80 for the Junior Suite, $65 for our friends' Deluxe room), it was worth every cent. Highly recommended.

The Essence is the latest installment of a small Hanoi based chain. It is located bang in the old town/tourist district but once you enter you leave all the chaos behind, it’s Vietnamese hospitality at its best. We arrived at 7am from the flight, understandably the room wasn’t ready yet, but it was by 10.30am. We requested a room as high up as possible and were given a surprisingly quiet 6th floor room with a nice view over the roofs of the capital. The room was tastefully decorated and well equipped, worthy of a European “hôtel de charme”. The only negative point could be its size: once the two suitcases are deployed, there is not much room left to go around. I should also mention that breakfast is plentiful and varied, the WiFi connection very good and that hotel staff speak excellent English (not a given in Vietnam). All in all, an excellent choice if you want to be in this neighborhood - people wanting to avoid the hectic atmosphere of the old town might prefer similar category hotels around the Opera House.

Arriving at the Essence after a long flight is the best way to get to know Hanoi and its people! Friendly and attentive staff will take very good care of you and cater for every single need you might have. Their internal travel agency can arrange any ticket, short trip or excursions you might conceive at competitive prices, rooms are beautifully appointed and very quiet ( which in Hanoi is a must!) Breakfast is probably one of the best I ever had! Warmly recommend staying here!

Our stay at the Essence Hotel Hanoi in a great central location in the Old Quarter exceeded our expectations in every respect. The hotel is spotlessly clean, and the rooms are well-appointed and comfortable, with laptops and other amenities provided. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and seemed to genuinely enjoy making our stay as pleasant as possible. We don't often eat in hotel restaurants, but the Essence Cafe had such good service, tasty Vietnamese and international food, and reasonable prices that we returned for meals several times. If you choose the Essence Hotel, you won't be disappointed.

This was the best (and cheapest) hotel that we stayed in over our 14 day trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. Beautiful new spacious rooms with comfortable beds and laptop. Great, authentic, cheap Vietnamese food in the restaurant and Western food as well. Lovely breakfast and very helpful, efficient staff. I organised the accommodation directly with the hotel by email and everything went very smoothly from airport transfers to the trip to Halong Bay - all organised by the hotel staff. The hotel kept our luggage for us during our overnight trip to Halong Bay (well worth doing - we booked Paradise Luxury cruise). The hotel is in a perfect location in the old quarter - close to everything. We had 4 rooms -window junior suites with king sized bed and complimentart bottle of wine and fruit for about $80/night and window deluxe twin rooms for about $70/night on the 5th and 6th floors. There are slightly cheaper rooms but these were fantastic! I can't speak more highly of this lovely hotel and their wonderful staff. 5 star quality at a very low price!!
