“fantastic place to stay in Hanoi”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

We stayed in this hotel prior to our visit to Hoi An (where we also stayed in the Essence). The main advantage of the hotel is its location - you couldnt get more in the centre of the old quarter if you tried and believe me, its full-on as you come out of the hotel! If you havent been to Hanoi before nothing prepares you for the madness that is the old quarter with thousands of motorbikes and scooters driving erratically all over the place, we were like rabbits caught in the headlights as we stepped out, it was barmy! The hotel is almost on a crossroads in the town where people congregate in the evenings to sit out and eat street food and drink beer (ridiculously cheap) so there is an amazing buzz going on, its a fantastic atmosphere. The hotel itself is an oasis of calm and tranquility amongst all this and as soon as you step back into the air-conditioned cocoon you feel sane again. Staff are great (thanks for all your help Joe) and the rooms are very nicely appointed. Breakfast is good and we ate there one night which was also very good. Hanoi in August is exhausting with the heat so we struggled to do too much but did visit the Hanoi Hilton which was interesting, the lake, and the French Quarter before going off to Halong Bay. Best meal by far in Honoi was at Cau Go Vietnames cuisine, on the 6th floor of a building overlooking the lake. Get the hotel to book you a table and ask to sit out on the terrace - the view is magical as the lake is lit up at night and you are absolutely in the best spot to soak up the atmosphere. the food here was the best we ate all trip - go for the barbeque options - king prawns come in half kilo and kilo on the menu but they were happy to do a quarter kilo for us and they were absolutely delicious. All the other options we tried were great too - meal for the three of us including drinks was £39 and this is high-end stuff. Thanks for a great stay the staff at the Essence, you made our trip!

Room Tip: Higher rooms are less noisy, we didnt experience any noise (other than a drunk Aussie who brought ba...

The location was fantastic as your right in the action and The Old Quarter is the life of the party in Hanoi. This little boutique Hotel was a gem. From the moment I arrived to the last moment until I left I felt very well cared for by the skilled abundant staff who went out of there way to please. My balcony room was double glassed and quiet even with the active street. It was a great place to watch the the mix of activities which was fascinating. If you need to know anything about the do's and don'ts, how much to pay for things the front desk will look after you.
I also was very appreciative of the girls who organise travel requirements as I decided last minute to cancel a train ticket that I had paid for and fly to Da Nang instead. They organised a 50% refund for me and I didn't even ask them.
There was so much to see and do in the Old Quarter I wished I had more time. This is a Hotel that I would recommend to everyone because of the service, great food and fantastic location.
Even if I had a bigger budget I would still prefer to stay at the Essence Hotel. I will definitely be back and would like to say a very big thank you to the lovely staff who made my Hanoi experience a positive and happy time.

Room Tip: I really like having a front room onto the street as I loved watching the street life and feeling pa...

This hotel has a modest modern facade that gives little suggestion of what lies inside - a beautifully furnished and very comfortable building offering service second to none. The rooms mostly face the side, which keeps the noise down, and our Junior deluxe suite was a very good size for a city centre hotel. Rose petals were strewn over the luxurious bed, excellent free goodies are on offer (including some lovely dried ginger and a bottle of French-looking red wine which turned out to be Vietnamese), and breakfasts are truly delicious. We particularly liked the home made yoghurt. Only the fruit juice was a bit below par. But this place is still 100 per cent recommendable.

Room Tip: Go for a room at the side - the front could be a bit noisy; it's worth shelling out the extra fo...

Apologies for the late review. The service at this hotel was outstanding. Toan arranged a large portion of out stay in vietnam based on us booking one night at this hotel. She arranged for our overnight Halong bay cruise on the Dragon Pearl and out overnight train ticket down to Da Nang.

The room at the essence was absolutely fantastic for the price paid. it was 5 star luxury. the bed was so comfortable and the facilities excellent.

The breakfast was lovely.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Hanoi. Great location in the centre of the old town.

we stayed several days in Hannoi and surroundings.
They make you feel as if you were among friends/family.
Steve and the personnel are just fantastic. they take care of you and solve any need.
Breakfast and dinner were as expected or even better. restaurants and shops reccomended very good, They take care of our baggage while we were visiting Sapa, and let us use a room to take shower and breakfast in one of the intermediate trips, ...
But there is a detail we will never forget. We had, as many other travelers, some samll problem with those tricicle riders. They considered the tip offered was not enough (the price was fixed and payed in advance) and we were a family with only one man and situation was not confortable when we reached the hotel. As soon as hotel's personnel realized something was hapening with one of thier clients, they went out of their desks and hekped us. we really felt as if we were sith som friends in this delicate situation (not dangerous but uncomfortable).
If you travel with your family or your friends and want to feel as if others are also helping you, this is the place.
Very well located in the center of old city, close to the lake, water puppets, ...

Superb location in the heart of the old town. Wonderful warm and informative reception after arrival. We are usually a bit skeptical about suggestions regarding restaurants and the like. But we totally liked the Green Mango restaurant. A bit upmarket but good for a change after savouring the offerings at the food stalls.
Rooms are not huge but very tasteful and extremely well equiped. Way above three star expectations: each of our rooms came with a relatively new laptop!
The restaurant / cafe is a nice relaxing place with good food. Breakfast was fresh, plentiful and with a lot of choice.
When we returned from our trip to Halong Bay we didn't have a room at the Essence any more but we were welcomed like we were still guests. We could leave our luggage for the day and we could even take a shower. That's what we call service!

Room Tip: We had a connecting family room at the 7th floor and only had one tiny window but that didn't bo...

I definitely rate this hotel for its location and cleanliness and friendly, helpful staff.
We booked the top suite because the room rates are so reasonable. The room was great. 7th floor. Looking out the back over the old town rooftops. It might be a bit noisy if you're looking over the front street.

But what a location! Right in amongst the old district shops and restaurants. We had heard about a place referred to as 'beer corner'. We wanted to go there so asked at reception. We were walked to the front door where the concierge pointed about 10m immediately to the left. We were practically on top of it!
And only about 5 minutes walk to the old lake in the Centre of town.
If you like Vietnamese food but are not up for the street food I'd recommend Cau Go. Ask for directions at reception. It's on the 5th and 6th floors overlooking the lake also only 5 minutes walk from essence Hotel.
Our only complaint was that due to having a very early flight we arranged a wake up call just in case- because we needed to have left the hotel by 4am. The staff also offered to pack us a little breakfast. But... no wake up call (I came down to find the fellow still sleeping- apparently I should have given him a wake up call!), no breakfast, the car service didn't arrive so they used a taxi and we almost missed our flight.

All in all I would highly recommend staying at Essence Hotel, but use your own alarm if you need to get up early! Enjoy.
