We stayed in this hotel prior to our visit to Hoi An (where we also stayed in the Essence). The main advantage of the hotel is its location - you couldnt get more in the centre of the old quarter if you tried and believe me, its full-on as you come out of the hotel! If you havent been to Hanoi before nothing prepares you for the madness that is the old quarter with thousands of motorbikes and scooters driving erratically all over the place, we were like rabbits caught in the headlights as we stepped out, it was barmy! The hotel is almost on a crossroads in the town where people congregate in the evenings to sit out and eat street food and drink beer (ridiculously cheap) so there is an amazing buzz going on, its a fantastic atmosphere. The hotel itself is an oasis of calm and tranquility amongst all this and as soon as you step back into the air-conditioned cocoon you feel sane again. Staff are great (thanks for all your help Joe) and the rooms are very nicely appointed. Breakfast is good and we ate there one night which was also very good. Hanoi in August is exhausting with the heat so we struggled to do too much but did visit the Hanoi Hilton which was interesting, the lake, and the French Quarter before going off to Halong Bay. Best meal by far in Honoi was at Cau Go Vietnames cuisine, on the 6th floor of a building overlooking the lake. Get the hotel to book you a table and ask to sit out on the terrace - the view is magical as the lake is lit up at night and you are absolutely in the best spot to soak up the atmosphere. the food here was the best we ate all trip - go for the barbeque options - king prawns come in half kilo and kilo on the menu but they were happy to do a quarter kilo for us and they were absolutely delicious. All the other options we tried were great too - meal for the three of us including drinks was £39 and this is high-end stuff. Thanks for a great stay the staff at the Essence, you made our trip!
