Owner description: Hanoi Cooking Centre established in 2009, remains Hanoi's only purpose built cooking school and culinary centre. A variety of cooking classes and street food tours are available twice daily. All classes begin with welcome tea, while a chef gives a brief introduction to the local Chau Long market and Vietnamese market culture generally. After a 3 minute walk guests arrive at the market and are immediately submerged into the hustle, bustle and wonder of one of the last remaining wet markets in Hanoi. Our chef will explain the produce and offer various samples along the way. After returning to the centre you will then participate in a 'hands-on' cooking class and the morning / afternoon finishes in our air-conditioned restaurant where you and your class mates can enjoy the dishes you have prepared along with free flow drinks. All guests receive a complimentary and much sort after Hanoi Cooking Centre apron and recipe cards. Class + lunch = approximately 3.5hrs For guests preferring a more adventurous time, our 5 hour street food tour also includes the market tour and then takes guests to 5 of the best known (amongst the locals and our HCC staff) street food venues across Hanoi. The number 1 rule for this tour = come hungry! For guests with limited time try our Market Tour & Lunch or Dinner package for a truly authentic Hanoi culinary experience.

I booked the Hanoi Cooking Centre's Street Eats tour and Cooking Class online, and was super excited about it. Both classes took up a whole day, and it was the best day I had in Hanoi! (Although I was fresh off the plane, so excited about everything!) There were 5 people in the Street Eats tour, and our guide was a young, local chef. He was friendly and enthusiastic and knew everything about everything, not just street food, but Hanoi and Vietnam. We started at 9am with a bowl of Pho Bo, then it was on to the Cho Chau Long meat and vegetable market and a number of street food joints around the Old Quarter, before finishing up with a cup of coffee at Ca Phe Duy Tri. We took a taxi whenever needed, which was paid for by the company. Personally, this tour was great to get to know street food 'safely', as otherwise I would have had no idea what was what. In the afternoon, I took the Cooking Class which had just 2 people. It was really cool to get in the kitchen and actually make what I'd eaten in the morning. At the end, we went upstairs to eat everything we'd cooked. As a thank you present, we were also given an HCC apron and recipe pamphlet. I did another cooking class in Hoi An, and this one was far better because you actually prepare the food yourself, rather than 'put together' ingredients that have already been prepared.

The Street Eats tour was worth every penny. We got to try a bit of everything, in local spots, and they were all delicious. It was raining that day, but it didn't phase us or our guide. He was very friendly and happy to explain everything and answer all of our questions. I definitely think it's worth the money. We were a couple traveling on our honeymoon and had one other person join our group - so we were only 3! Great memories from this tour that we will cherish forever - just look at the photos!

A fantastic opportunity to learn about Vietnamese cuisine with hands-on experience of creating delicious dishes that you can then do at home. We started with a visit to the local market, which in itself was fascinating. We then went to the cookery school to make spring rolls, pho, papaya salad, prawns in batter and bananas in coconut milk - every dish a winner. Top tip: don't have breakfast before you arrive, as you'll have a bowl of pho to eat at 10am!

I took this class with my family and it wasn't very good. The instructors didn't speak English well and it felt like more of a lecture than class. Since there were so many people there, it often felt rushed and we ended up having a difficult time making the food correctly. It was also not very clean - we saw cooking assistants picking utensils up off the floor and not washing them. We did enjoy the trip to the market, but probably should have stopped there.

The session started with a walk around the market and introduction to some of the more unusual items. We then went back to the cooking centre where, in pairs, we cooked our fabulous lunch, which was eaten upstairs in the dining room. An interesting and fun morning, followed by a delightful meal.
