We stayed at the Metropole on January as part of the I love Chocolate package. We had club privileges which I highly recommend, including cocktails and afternoon tea in the club lounge daily. We loved our room in the Opera wing. Loved the French restaurant, particularly the Tet degustation menu. The only thing we did not liked was the spa treatment. It was $145 each for a special including an "Indochine journey massage" and footbath ritual which turned out to be just a matter of placing your feet in a water bath - no massage etc. It was terrible. The indochine journey could hardly be called a massage either. So enjoy the hotel, don't bother with the spa.

Stayed in the new wing. the hotel is charming & retains the old french colonial look/atmosphere. Close to the near by lake, water puppet show & the old quarter. Lots to see in the old quarter--within easy wakling distance. Many restaurants nearby. A big advantage is to be able to use US dollars--no need to exchange into Dongs.

I stayed one night at the Sofitel Metropole for business. This was my second stay at this hotel. My first stay was 3 years ago for a leisure. I stayed in the new wing both times in a standard double room (1 king bed).

Pros:
- The hotel is exquisitely charming. Great French colonial feel to the entire hotel in the public spaces and the rooms. I was there in mid-January and they had lights up in the courtyard for Christmas / the Lunar New Year.
- Great location for shopping and site-seeing. Lots of art galleries within 10 minutes of walking. 10 minutes from the lake and 5 minutes from the opera
- The food is good. I've only eaten at Spices Garden (the Vietnamese restaurant), room service and had a snack at hte bakery but all were good. When I stayed 3 years ago, Spices Garden had a "hawker's buffet" which was terrific. But expensive. The bar in the courtyard garden is also really nice early evening.
- There is a gym with relatively new equipment. I would say it is average in terms of the variety of equipment they have. The gym is also a little dark and depressing.
- In-room check-in if you use their airport pick-up service.

Cons:
- Service needs some work. I ordered breakfast room-service and asked for it to be delivered at 740AM and it did not arrive until almost 8AM. Some of the hotel employees do not speak English very well.
- The rooms are small.
- Only one sink in the bathroom and no separate bath and shower.

Tips:
- Definitely do the trip to Halong Bay but don't book it through the hotel. There are tons of tour operators who organize trips to Halong Bay. The Sofitel Metropole outsources this service but still charges a HUGE premium for it.

We spent three nights at the Metropole in January at the end of a five-week trip to Asia. It was a great way to relax after some rather mixed experiences. Hotel is beautiful, staff very accommodating. Just wish the weather had been better so we could have enjoyed the pool. Oh well, the champagne in the romantic Club Bar made up for it! Would definitely recommend.

We spent three days at the Sofitel Metropole and we were absolutely delighted. The location is exceptional, many of the major attractions of down-town Hanoi can be reached by a few minutes walk and as well famous luxus brands as also the old city center with pittoresque streets, small shops and restaurants are just nearby.
The hotel lobby, rooms and restaurants are beautifully furnished in colonial style and there is a nice pool and garden area.
Though it was rather cold in Hanoi during our stay end of December, we had lunch twice at the pool restaurant and enjoyed very much as well the food as also the place. The other restaurants were also excellent.
The service (reception, concierge, restaurants etc.) was always perfect.
We are looking forward to come back to this charming place.

This is my second time in Hanoi for a holiday. This time I decided to stay at the Sofitel Metropole because of the charm and the ambience of the hotel. This didn't disappoint me as the hotel is the best place to stay in Hanoi. Beautiful and charming! We bought the Accor Plus Advantage card that we were able to use at the Spice Garden dinner and breakfast and Le Beaulieu for breakfast again the next day without any problem. In the evening we went to the restaurant again for dinner but this time they told us that one table should be at the end and the other table at the other end. This is ridiculous! Anyway the assistant F & B Manager came and said that they will allow 2 separate tables in one area only now but next time they will stick to their policy. This is the first time that we were treated very lowly by any hotel. Specially for a 5 star hotel like Sofitel. I regretted staying in this hotel. Their front desk is also unreliable. They forgot to bill us for breakfast and I with all honesty told them that we had breakfast at Spice Garden. I waited for 10 min with no action. Next day they charged me the breakfast and the dinner that we paid in cash! What kind of hotel is this?? Never will I recommend this to anyone.

Hard to add much beyond what everyone else has written. We stayed there twice over the course of a trip throughout the region, and both stays were wonderful. Would recommend getting a room in the old wing, the new wing is nice but less charm. Was a great experience. Club bar has a really nice old world vibe.
