First of all Hanoi Hostel 2 is a hostel and it must be rated for what it is: a hostel, not a boutique hotel! The rooms are cleaned daily, have A/C, don't smell, beds are comfortable enough and each bed has a private safe underneath, which is big enough for a huge rucksack or big suitcase.
Breakfast consist in tea/coffee/bread/egg and.... noodles. Quite nice in my humble opinion
It's near the tourist attractions, the lake and Bia Hoi Junction.

I don't usually write reviews bur I must spend a word of appreciation for the staff and the manager. Unfortunately, I got beaten and robbed at night by 3 people, in a different area of town (not very smart of me but hey, bad things happen!). The staff took me to several police wards to report the crime, kindly translated the report in Vietnamese and wouldn't even take money for the service provided, although I offered a tip. Being beaten and robbed is a shocking experience but the staff at the hostel made me think there are still many kind people in the world.

Just go.

This hotel is located on the west lake in Hanoi. There are two wings- an older city wing and a new lake wing. I stayed in the old wing, which probably has cheaper rooms (about 90 USD). The rooms are very large and clean, but a little run-down because of the age. The 2 lifts in this wing are also very small and rickety. On the whole, though i am very satisfied with this Hotel. The food in the restaurants is excellent, the only problem being that the restaurant serving international food closes at 11 pm. The breakfast is very good as well. There is a night club in the hotel, with questionable reputation but i found the quality of music and of the band to be surprisingly good. Staff are also very helpful. The hotel is located in the heart of the city- a small inconvenience because of the crowd but on the positive side there is an excellent atmosphere outside the hotel with quaint cafe's and shops that afford good opportunities to laze, people gaze and sip beer/coffee, weather permitting. There is a bank on the ground floor in the same building so currency exchange is not a problem (though everyone in Hanoi accepted USD). Airport is full 1 hour away, but taxi is very cheap- about 12 USD.

I’d call it a three star hotel. There are two towers, we were in the left tower which appears older but had a suite with a sitting room. Mini bar, safe, no Kleenex though, two half-liter bottles of water provided per day but you can buy a 1.5 liter outside 10,000VND, not even the locals drink tap water. Vendors ask for $1US but the going price is 5,000 dong for the half-liter and 10,000 dong for the 1.5 liter. Pretty good breakfast buffet with smoked salmon. Desk plus three chairs. CNN, BBC and even HBO. Wireless internet access @ $1US for 30 minutes. Three pronged 220v electrical so I had to get laptop power through a light bulb adapter. In room lighting rather poor, 25 watt reading lamps just don’t do the job. Taxi’s cheap around town $1US for first 2km. Our stay part of a 16 day package from GreenBamboo.com began in Hanoi, ending in Saigon with three jet flights in country, so I don’t know what the room rate is. Everyone does Halong Bay cruise out of Hanoi. I highly recommend you NOT make it a day trip. Have an overnight as we did on Junk Victory appears to be one of the best junks.

The hotel was fine- clean, nice rooms, good service. But I had the worst experience ever- there is a school directly outside the hotel and every sing morning, Monday-Saturday, a man with the most annoying, shrill voice I've ever heard gets on a loudspeaker and literally screams into it for an hour. It is some kind of exercise drill for the children, but it starts at 6:45am every single morning, and repeats once or twice later during the day.

I wore earplugs to sleep and shut the windows and blinds, but could hear him yelling as if he were in the next room. I complained, but to no avail. It is customary to wake up early in Vietnam, but on Saturday it is beyond painful! I suppose you could stay in the "City Wing" but then you don't get the nice view of the lake/pond outside the hotel.

The food was kind of yucky, and the restaurant staff don't speak English, even when you speak really slowly and point to what you want on the menu. They say they understand, but then bring you the wrong thing. If you are vegetarian, you will starve. There's no restaurants nearby after like 8pm (it's kind of far from the hotel) except the roadside spots, where they rinse the dish in dirty dishwater that street dogs eat out of. There's only one- "Oh My God" which is decent, open till 10pm.

Breakfast while not the best buffet breakfast but quiet ok.Staff were very helpfull and while a bit away from the shopping area still only $2 cab fair. While not a 5 star hotel but very clean and tidy and would recommened to anyone.
