Owner description: A rare breed of turtle enjoys this popular lake almost as much as countless locals and tourists. Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. Centrally located in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake serves as a massive home base, and provides endless people-watching and recreational opportunities on the edge of the Old Quarter.

“The main city point: a lake”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

The old district is situated on the north ed, crowded vibrant on south end area high end shops
It's just a great walk around the lake in the shade of trees, getting away from the hustle.
Many local walking sitting relaxing exercising, wedding photographs just sit on a bench watching this daily street life.

“Nice stroll”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

We went for a stroll around the lake. It took approximately 40 minutes to walk the whole distance. Many locals do some kind of exercise here, like jogging and joga. There are many shaded trees around the lake and benches where one can just sit and relax. It seemed as if this is a very popular spot in Hanoi to come to and relax, especially during late afternoon hours. Here you can escape from the chaotic and overcrowded traffic in the streets!

“City Focal Point”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

Northern end has a lot of shops and restaurants nearby and where all the locals hang out. View over lake was a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Don't bother with the night market where they close off streets. Too hot and crowded.
Hanoi shopkeepers are somewhat indifferent to selling you things. Much keener in Ho Chi Minh City. Best shopping was actually in Hoi An which is a beautiful place.

“Nice for a walk around”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

The lake is nice for a walk around. There is no fee to walk around the lake or take some pictures on the bridge. There is a fee however when you go across the bridge onto the little island, on the island there is a little temple. We paid to go over, it is about 20,000 dong each ($1) and only takes a few minutes to walk around. We got some nice pictures on the island, but you would not be missing anything not going over.

“Polluted hole.”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

There is a nice story about an ancient turtle that lives in this lake, thus you would think the authorities would take more effort in cleaning the place up. The turtle is thought to be the only one of its kind left in the world-another one was clubbed to death in the lake a few years ago.

It's crazy trying to cross the road from the old quarter to the lake so go early when the road traffic is still light.

Certainly not place for a romantic picnic but one of the City's attractions, so probably worth going to see if you have nothing else to do.
