“Best time to visit Perfume Pagoda”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2013

Perfume pagoda (Vietnamese pronunciation is Chua Huong) it considered is most beautiful landscape and sacred caving pagoda in Vietnam, it's location about 70 km southwest of Hanoi, it use to belong to Ha Tay province, but since that former Ha Tay province integrated to Hanoi city, now it under management of Hanoi capital city. Perfume pagoda actually located in side the cave under limestone mountains, the rock information and mountain structure is hundred percentage similar to Halong bay, so landscape here are also amazing as well.
time suggestion for visiting this place

In fact there are two time for visiting Perfume pagoda, it's depend on tourist expectation and travel ideal as well. Best time for getting to know about local religion culture is main festival, it last from Vietnamese traditional new year celebration, it's call Tet holiday, it last for 3 month. if anyone interesting in this aspect of local life should plan a day or 2 days trip for come here from February to April. While here you guys would see many interesting things, such as offering money and many colorful decoration which use for offering to Buddha and deities as well. But please noted that due to so many Vietnamese people come, let prepare you mind set that, boat trip would be a little more difficult to get and some time you guys will be hassle as well. For foreigners should travel to here by local travel's agent organization, if so tour guide will care everything for you, all you have to do is, saving time for enjoy sightseeing and learn about culture of Vietnam throughout the festival's activities.

A little boat row normally carry 4 people, if your group is only 2, and would like to take private boat row, it mean you will have to pay extra 2 extra seat , it's cost very little just 3,5 USD person.
politely treatment to local boat rower we should prepare some small note to tip them otherwise to will hassle you make you feel a little embarrassing in public....

Second time suggestion is from end of March to December, it's less touristy and more quiet. it's very pleasure for slow pace rowing on river to enjoy sightseeing amazing landscape. There is cable car to the top of the mountain where the cave and pagoda are. After an hour boat row, you should take cable car ride up and trekking down is easier and saving a lot energy.

Itinerary suggestion or combination with others region close by, for 2 days 1 night, you guys can spend half day Hanoi city tour, after lunch go to village close by perfume pagoda for home-stay, once here have couple hour for easy cycling around village under the feet of cliff limestone mountain.

Next day morning we start get on the boat row, we will start earlier before rush hours, whole area will give us peace atmosphere and hassle free too. This place also able to combined with Hoa Lu Tam Coc, Cuc Phuong national park or Mai Chau, Puluong where ethnic minority people living. Then return to Hanoi by other way.

Enjoy trip

“A perfect scenic day trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2013

A perfect scenic daytrip with a relaxing river cruise on a little rowing boat. We walked up the mountain though there was also a cable car available. The temples are stunning and beautiful.

“Intriguing Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2013

We booked a trip there by APT travel, we traveled on a weekday to avoid too many people. We rode the minibus provided by the travel agency from the hotel in hanoi, the service comes with a tour guide (speaks english). You can enjoy the scenery along the trip (2-hours trip from hanoi). It has been a nice experience to be there because not all tourist will pick this trip. After 2 hours on the road, you will have to ride a 1-hour boat trip closer to the mountain of the pagoda. You can buy foods and drinks there but with a higher price. Then a cable car to take you to the top of the mountain or you can choose trekking (40-45 mins). We chose the cable car because it's raining at that time.

We love to see pagodas and temples. Aside from its architecture and colors, we also got useful information from the guide on why they call such pagoda as "Perfume Pagoda", there are several pagodas you can see if you will choose this trip. We didn't have any regrets after visiting this place. (attached pictures). Enjoy...

“Nice boat ride and interesting cave”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2013

I booked this tour for $16.00 in alley that had a lot of backpacker hostels. The trip was run by joy travel. We stopped off at the usual disabilities workshop. Be careful if you are buying anything there as they tried to shortchange me 100,000 dong.
Then we went to the river for the boat trip. I had previously done tam coc which was beautiful. Found they weren't as pushy here. I walked up instead of cable car and bet the cable car people. Took 35 minutes. Had a lady walking with us, then as soon as I said, no tip, she said only a dollar, we said no And waited for her to go. Then continued walking up. These people are very cruel with animals. They had a chained up monkey and squirrels confined in small cages. Also turtles and snakes kept where the boats come in. At the end the tour guide told us all to tip the rower $1 or $2. Our minibus only had 7 people on it. The lunch was fine and squat toilets very clean, they had butt guns and you had to manually flush them.
