Everything you will read in reviews about the Art Trendy being an excellent hotel is true. Following a 3 day cruise on Ha Long Bay, we stayed three nights in Hanoi at the Art Trendy Hotel in mid-September 2013. The hotel is centrally located in Hanoi's Old Quarter, in the middle of a short street (Hang But), which fills with parked motor bikes limiting car passage, making it a relatively quiet street compared to most in the Old Quarter. Our van, blocked by parked motor bikes, had to stop at the corner maybe 30 yards from the hotel entrance. Even before we were all out of the van, several hotel staff were there to take our bags to the hotel. In the small but nicely appointed and well air-conditioned lobby we were provided with fruit drinks, including for our 3 friends who were staying at a different hotel, while the staff quickly processed our check-in.
If this were a major hotel and not a small boutique hotel, it would be rated at least 4.5 star (downgraded from 5 star only due to the wood laminate room furnishings, which are more 4 star hotel quality), with the service provided by all the staff being 5 star all the way. English is well spoken by the front desk staff, the tour desk lady, and Kathy who was usually in the restaurant in the morning to take our orders and later on at the front desk. All of the staff greeted us each morning with genuine smiles and usually by our names ("Good morning Mr. John, how are you today"). Our family suite room on the 6th floor (reached by an elevator that stops at the 5th floor and then stairs to the 6th) was very large, included both a queen size bed (advertised as a double size) and a wide single bed, with a large marble tiled bath. The beds in the room were very comfortable, as good as any 5 star western hotel. The in-laws were in another family suite room on the 5th floor which was smaller, but still very comfortable. The shower in our bathroom could hold about 3 or 4 people if you wanted to shower with friends. The shower water was hot and there was plenty of it, with very strong water pressure. The air-conditioning in the room was also excellent with the low fan speed keeping the room cool at night, with little noise, allowing undisturbed sleep. Several English speaking channels, including CNN, Discovery, HBO and other movie channels, were available on the LCD TV. There is also a water boiler and coffee/tea provided, free bottled water, and a laptop computer in the room available for use by the guests. On the first floor across from the restaurant area there are also two computers with a printer available for guest use.
The small (four tables seating four people each), but very comfortable restaurant area used for the free breakfast provided a surprising large variety of food selections of very high quality food. The breakfast service is a mix of set menu items and buffet for fruits, yogurt, cereals, breads, juices, tea, and coffee. Each morning after filling up nicely on a large bacon omelet, toast, fruit, juice and coffee I was always asked if I wanted to order more. You will not leave breakfast being hungry.
The hotel's location in the Old Quarter of Hanoi is very good, with everything within the Quarter in reach by walking. The staff were always very helpful in providing specific directions to recommended restaurants and places we wanted to visit. There is also a tour desk in the lobby for those looking for some organized tours. The staff will also assist in getting you a taxi for areas beyond walking distance. The hotel also provides guests with a very detailed map of the Old Quarter, with many places of interest, such as temples, museums, shopping areas, and restaurants identified. We used this map with much success to show taxi drivers where we wanted to go by just pointing on the this map. I found this map to be very accurate as we walked the many streets of the Old Quarter, where the names of the same street may change three times within a very short distance. Never got lost and always made it where we wanted to go and back to the hotel with ease. You might be able to find as good a hotel in Hanoi, but unlikely you'll find a better one or one of better value.
