“Great Hotel but not great location for independent exploring”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2013 via mobile

We stayed here 3 nights on a tour. Hotel really helpful and friendly and great if you are being picked up to go places. If you want to wander around on your own it's not really handy for most sites and walking around Hanoi is definitely not a relaxing experience. Food excellent. A cup of tea was expensive.

I finished my Vietnam Gate 1 tour at this hotel. The staff were helpful at accommodating all my requests-faxing, exchanging money, calling a taxi, sightseeing, and directions. The hotel is in the Old Quarter, and the average cost to go to the main tourist sights was $2 USD. As with most hotels in Vietnam, all have some traffic noise, TV reception comes and goes, the WiFi is not 100%, the walls are thin, and elevators may be slow. The Chalcedony was the exception (ask for a rear facing room), if the WiFi or TV reception goes out, call and they will reset immediately. No problems with the elevators (there are 2 and they are quick!). The breakfast had more than I could possibly want, and the fried eggs were most welcomed. By Vietnam standards, I thought my room was large, the bed very comfortable, and the feather pillows comfy. All in all, I enjoyed my extended stay of 6 nights!

The Chalcedony is placed in a relatively narrow but busy road. There are many local food stalls and shops around the hotel. The yam candy provided in the lobby really makes check in enjoyable (it's really really good). The Lobby is relatively small, however that isn't really a problem. The rooms are somewhat fine. It is quite large and has a flat screen TV. The bathroom was simple and clean, and mid-sized. Breakfast was acceptable, with Vietnamese and Western breakfast choices. Some of the food are cold though.

Room Tip: Ask for a Low/ High floor. The low floors can be accessed faster as the lifts are slow. The Higher-f...

I am really sorry if my 5 star ratings is misleading but i can not help to award this hotel with top notch rating because it gives me the best web-surfing experience EVER! The speednet test showed 30 Mbps download speed inside my room which prompted me to download things i will never download due to the poor speed in my hometown. The rest of the hotels are good and I really have nothing to complain about. The room was clean, the bathroom was clean and functional, food pretty good, and the location was excellent. Room was a bit small but i had been to super small rooms so this is not a problem at all for me. There is a convenience store just across the hotel, a lotteria fast food joint if you are hungry for some junk food, or nice pho noodle hawkers nearby the hotel.

I liked the hotel location, nested in the busy streets of the old town, within the walking distance to the markets and the restaurants of the old town center and the lake. Staff was very friendly and eager to accomodate my requests.
The room felt a bit run down. Breakfast choices were a bit limited. Overall a good hotel to stay at.

We stayed in this great hotel on a recent trip! The staff was very friendly and spoke wonderful English! They were very well informed about local area. The breakfast was good and plentiful.

The hotel is centrally located, a short walk to day and night market, the lake and many local restaurants. There is a small self mart across street that sells Coca-Cola Lights 2 for a $1. I often carried an empty can in my jacket pocket to explain to other vendors, but the owner of the store knew the Diet or Light!

We loved shopping the market and the short walk made it easy to return with our purchases!

Room Tip: Get an extra room key card to put in the slot inside your room, so when you return from sightseeing...

We stayed here at the end of our Gate 1 tour. Lovely newer hotel located near market and the river. Within walking distance of many restaurants and a great french bakery. Clean rooms. Helpful staff. Great breakfast.
