Brilliant stay for just under a week, including trips out to Bac Ha and Halong Bay (organised by the brilliant Hien and her team). Location is excellent, in the heart of the old quarter but tucked away so that come 6pm the place is calm and quiet.

The room (Lemongrass) was more than comfortable in size for one and would have been fine for two. More than big enough bathroom. All spotless and of very good quality for this range of hotel. The best bit is the style - small touches which Hien has very deliberately made (art, furniture, pebbles over shower drains etc) which make it feel unique and homely. Apparently this was to make it feel like a traditional Vietnamese experience - can't claim to know if that has been achieved but it has certainly made for a great place to stay.

Also worth noting the breakfast is delicious (the pho is good) and the dining area has benefited from Hien's design touch too. Makes a nice place to read with a beer too.

All of the staff are very friendly and helpful, and I really enjoyed all recommendations/trips booked through them.

I really hope Hien achieves her dream of having a bigger place in Hoi An, it would be well suited to the atmosphere she is trying to achieve (HAS achieved) - I will be first in line to visit when it opens.

Friendly service, clean and well located. Found it very good value. We stayed in the Lemongrass room which is the smallest but still enough room for two travellers - it was only $30 a night inc breakfast. The reception staff are extremely helpful.

Wonderful little gem in a quiet back alley near the cathedral. Stylishly decorated with an all natural feel. "Ginger" room was spacious with a balcony view, the "Lemongrass" room was a bit smaller sadly with an impeccable view on the neighbours' wall. The staff were really lovely, helping where ever they could, we booked an airport pickup which called ahead to have the young porter (not unlike "Short Round") carry our backpacks from the main street to the hotel. The young lad then carried both of our heavy European trashbags in one go to the third floor. A strong people the Vietnamese people are indeed. We could also leave our bags while on a two day trip trough Halong bay and they booked our train tickets to Hue. The staff really is commendable! It is a great spot to discover Hanoi from without all the noise from the traffic to wake you up with. Would definitely return.

I stayed here for one night before departing Hanoi.
It's tucked in the dead end of a very dense alleyway. The alleyway is less than 3 m across, and taxis can't get into the alleyway and it's packed with other backpacker hostels. However, it's location is good, in the Old Quarter, near St Joseph Cathedral. The only annoyance is to avoid other touts along the way to find the hotel. However, I hear they provide a pick up service from the airport.

Service is good. I called them and got a $10 discount for the Pepper Room(the largest room). $45/night for queen sized bed in a big room. Wifi is free with good connectivity. They also provide private car to the airport for $15 flat- cheaper and more comfortable than taxi. They even provide foreign currency exchange at a very competitive rate. Everyone, forget about exchanging money before coming to Vietnam. Do it at the hotel.

Only negative is the window opens to no view at all. Another building is 1m away and there's a little space in between to let minimal light and air through.

Overall, a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Ask for hotel pick up from airport because it can be daunting to navigate tight alleys with many tou...

This charming boutique hotel situated in the middle of the old quarter is simply gorgeous - a home away from home. Given its location, tucked away in a dead end alley off a lane, we were glad we used their very reasonable airport pick up service. All the personnel are marvellous - welcoming, informative, attentive, helpful. We got the most out of our 4 day trip to Hanoi because of their expertise and suggest you ask them for their recommendations. Mme Hien's advice was invaluable, better than any guide books. We had an overnight trip to Halong Bay and were able to store our luggage. This meant we experienced two Star Anise rooms during our stay; one on the 3rd floor at the front of the hotel and one on the 5th at the back. Both were large, charmingly appointed and spotless with small balconies. The beds were king size, comfortable with beautiful linen. Our luggage was taken to and from our room by a most obliging young man who also took our luggage through the alley and the lane to the taxi when we left. The breakfast, included in the rate, was served in a delightful room. This hotel is simply a gorgeous place to stay and experience Hanoi. The people make it very special. Value plus!!!

This property was one of two suggested by our travel tour planner at Tonkin Travel. We chose Maison D'Orient for its location and because other reviewers noted its quality and "old-style" Hanoi ambiance. They were spot-on on those counts. It was also the less expensive one, though that was not the reason we chose it and frankly for the quality and character of the staff and the hotel itself, we would have paid more. Others have posted photos -- we stayed in one of the "Star Anise" rooms that overlooked the alley leading to the hotel and we're glad we did since the other rooms were smaller, with smaller windows. The beds were comfortable (less firm than most Asian beds), the bathroom was clean and nicely appointed. TV, wifi, tea and attractive design in the rooms. The hotel is located conveniently in the Old Quarter, off what looks like a backpacker alley and then a turn into an even smaller alley. When we first arrived, I was worried that our pick-ups to go to Ha Long Bay and then to the airport would have trouble finding us, but no worries -- the very kind and cheerful staff at Maison D'Orient communicate well for all such arrangements, giving directions to other companies and having staff carry our bags to the main street when necessary. There are stairs in the hotel but no elevator. Breakfast was served in a lovely French-windowed room with fruits and toast, coffee, tea and fresh juice, and a made-to-order choice of pho or crepes. All were delicious and served on beautiful ceramics that Ms. Hien, the proprietor, designed and had made especially for the hotel. When we left Hanoi for Ha Long Bay, we took only the essentials and Ms. Hien allowed us to store our bags at the hotel. When we returned, she was so kind to let us repack our bags and this was after we had checked out of the hotel 3 days earlier! Then she recommended a very local place for dinner, not far away where we could have bahn cuon -- one step up from a street cart seller that we never would have tried on our own. And then she made sure we would be okay with our pick-up to the airport. There is no way we would have had such attentive and caring service at a larger hotel. We recommend this hotel highly, and will steer all our friends here. We plan on visiting Hanoi again and this will be our go-to place!

This is a brilliant place to stay in Hanoi.

Great staff, great value for money, great location and zero hassle.

1. The staff are unbelievably warm, thoughtful and friendly. Mme Hien, the manager, spent whole evenings pointing visitors to the best hidden gems for dinner, helping to plan sight-seeing trips and organising travel and transport. Staying here, you really benefit from great local knowledge from an unbelievably friendly and caring staff! Breakfast in the mornings and tea throughout the day was delicious.

2. The hotel itself is exceptionally well appointed. The rooms are very tastefully decorated with individual features. I expected the basics (AC, TV, etc) but was pleasantly surprised by the local tea and coffee facilities, bathroom supplies, luxurious pillows, etc. Staying here, you get great value for money!

3. Great location. You really are in the heart of Hanoi here. You step out of the hotel and straight into the old quarter. Its a wonderful base for exploration.

4. Zero hassle. Hotel organised transport to and from the airport (and did so honestly - far cheaper than fellow guests who got a taxi at the airport) and were very flexible about arrival, departure, etc. Staying over Chinese New Year, Mme Hien was also thoughtful enough to plan ahead on my behalf, making sure there would be a taxi available for the return to the airport etc.

All in all I was very happy to be staying here and am recommending it to all of my friends..2 more have booked in so far!
