A fair trek from where we were staying, near Hoan Kiem Lake, and it wasn't worth the effort. The lake is dull and dirty whilst the pagoda we visited was uninspiring. Hoan Kiem Lake is far more aesthetically pleasing lake and a walk around the circumference will give you a better experience of Vietnamese life.

Good place for a stroll to watch the locals, many engage in their interesting exercise regimes along the lake!

A large lake located in central Hanoi, the years have taken their toll, the temples / pagodas are slowly curcoming to age and the pollution from the traffic and there is a strong sewage smell on warmer days.
This however should not stop you from having a walk around and seeing some traditional aspects.

Hanoi has many lakes; West Lake is (I think) the biggest. It has may interesting thigns around it - Pagodas, some of the areas where the ex-pats live, some old "villages" which specialise in some trade, e.g. fish breeding, and many good hotels and restaurants. Worth seeing for a mix of local colour and the "new Hanoi" which is springing up

We went to West Lake twice, once in the daytime and again during dusk.It is quite impressive,
and provides enough space to have a leisurely and relaxing walkaround. In the daytime, the surrounding areas and nearby hotels and eateries were obviously more noticeable, but the
dusk scenes and its lighting were more appealing to us. We had a pleasant time, more at dusk,
just walking and stopping to rest at the benches provided along the walkway and viewing the
scenery.Certainly a good diversion for us from the very busy and rather hectic atmosphere of
the Old Quarter. Ice cream, coffee outlets, and restaurents are nearby. The general area could do with some clean public washrooms.
