Stay here if you are on a busy schedule and just need a place to sleep. Break fast spread is more asian and is just Basic. Lifts look risky but since it cannot be avoided just accepted. Has a decent pool - rooms are functional with occasional failures in the plumbing. Staff are friendly and the rooms are clean.

Room Tip: rooms close to the lift maybe noisy (the lift keeps beeping when it stops)

Hotel is self-ranked as 4-star. More like 2.5 to 3. The overall feel is that they stayed in a Hilton once and are trying to emulate it, but in the cheapest way possible.
The building design is "1990 modern", but is in need of some updating. Looks worn. Thin bedding and towels. Hard mattress. No hot water some days. Power goes out in Hanoi often, but the hotel has a generator.
Not a great location for restaurants or shops. VimiMart across the street for incidentals, drinks, snacks, but not a great selection of fresh food.
About 6km from Old Quarter, so expect to pay 70-80,000VND for a taxi.
Wired and wireless Internet included, slow but worked.
Included breakfast was mediocre. Terrible coffee. Mostly Asian foods at breakfast. They do have an egg/omelet station and some baked goods. Lunch buffet also mediocre. Did not try dinner service or food to order. "Eating local" much tastier and cheaper, but not as convenient. You won't starve staying here, but venturing out and trying local foods better.
Ridiculously expensive laundry service for Asia, same price as a North American hotel.
Sauna/Massage in the basement is reasonably priced. A bit seedy. Pool is fine, nothing special.

Room Tip: Hanoi traffic is a constant cacophony of horns, stay on the sides for a quieter sleep. Elevators ha...

bao son is located around 15 taxi minutes from the center. rooms are decent, staff is friendly though a bit slowl. unfortunately the internet connection was kind of poor and the "swimming pool" was covered and publicly accessible.
for sure not the best address in hanoi.

The Baoson gives itself 4 stars (self rated) on the Wotif site. It would be closer to 2 - 3. Decore is getting shabby - threads hanging off chairs, skylights in the lift grubby. But the service was the difficulty for us.
They were interested in selling us a private tour in their car, but not really assisting in other ways. The hotel book states they have postage stamps, etc. When asked they indicated it would cost $2US for each postcard to be sent. Ended up getting stamps at a bookshop, and didn't cost this much. While we were on a 'Business package' on the 7th floor, the wifi didn't work on that floor - so if I was actually there for business I wouldn't be happy.
Ordered 'Salmon pasta' in the coffee shop - it was literally that - fried pasta and fried salmon mixed - no shallots, no cheese, no spices - just inedible. Location at bit far out, but of course taxis are cheap. The big attraction for us was the pool - but the pool is actually a public pool - that is locals buy season tickets. So while we had one fun afternoon watching 30 kids having swimming lessons, with nervous parents and grandparents watching - it was really cute - it is not a pool to relax in with any level of service or privacy. So we didn't end us using the pool again during our stay.

The staff at the Bao Son was very friendly and helpful at all hours of the night and day. They booked tours, called cabs, and even personally walked me to a nearby shop the first day to help me purchase additional bottled water. The rooms are generally clean, if a bit shabby. The guest rooms and lobby have a/c, but the hallways and elevators do not, making for some dramatic temperature contrasts. Excellent breakfast buffet with numerous Vietnamese and Western offerings. Not a central location, but cabs are numerous and cheap so getting around is no problem.
