“Motorbike tour in North Vietnam.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

In October 2013 I flew in to Hanoi with six of my friends for a 12 day motorbike tour among the mountains in the far North, along the Chinese border - "The Border Crawl". We were joined by two Aussie guys so that made nine of us. Eight of us elected to drive sturdy Russian 650cc Urals and one of us chose a Jeep. For anyone not wanting to ride such a big bike there was the option of a 125cc Minsk. In future Honda trail bikes will also be available. A very helpful Vietnamese lady called Ms. Thao managed all our hotel bookings etc. Nominally the tour was booked through Explore Indochina. and they briefed us before we set off the following day. However, we were actually escorted on the tour by Mr. Cuong and his team - Nam the outrider, Diep the mechanic and Gioi bringing up the rear in the 4x4 support vehicle.
The next 12 days brought every kind of riding, all among fantastic mountain scenery. The roads were mainly very good, but occasionally very bad, so there was something for everybody.
We rode up and down mountains, in and out of the clouds and through mind-blowing Limestone Karst scenery.
The local people were friendly and inquisitive whilst the little children were totally charming and unspoiled. Also the rice harvest was going on so there was something to see at every turn
Every night we had single rooms in hotels that were always OK and often excellent - not one night without a hot shower! 2 nights were in home-stays that were excellent and a nice change. We did get rain, but we were expecting that to some extent and wet weather gear was supplied. They can also supply helmets and proper jackets if you don't take your own gear as we did.
At one point we loaded the bikes into boats and went for a cruise down an amazing river gorge before having a swim in Ba Be lake - stunning!
Food was always good and often we had delicious picnic lunches prepared by Cuong and the team. And we all got a lot of Chopstick practice in the evenings!
Organisation was faultless from start to finish and we all agreed that Cuong and his team did a fantastic job throughout the tour (1800km or so). Cuong has now set up his own tour company based in Hanoi and I cannot recommend him highly enough - if you fancy trying this sort of tour Cuong's Motorbike Adventure is the place to be!!
After a bit of sight seeing in the lovely city of Hanoi we rounded it all off with a 2 day boat tour of HaLong Bay organised for us by the lovely Ms.Thao - unforgettable!!
If you'd like to check out the route on the map here's the list of waypoints : Lang Son; Quang Uyen; Cao Bang; Pac Ngoi; Bau Lac; Dong Van; Thiong Huan; Bac Ha; SaPa; Than Uyen; Nghia Lo.... Go for it - you know you want to!!
