I found it very quiet in the hotel as I was in the annex so it wasn't great for meeting people, but good central location. Staff were there if you needed them but left you to it. The rooms were impeccably clean and very big. All in all it was a pleasant stay.

My wife and I enjoyed a lot our stay at Especen hotel. The rooms are just as advertised, spacious, bright, calm and clean. The staff (we mostly interacted with Anh) was very friendly and helpful. Overall, highly recommended budget hotel, perfect for a couple.

I liked this hotel a lot although my friend thought it was "lacking in character". The location was fantastic. Right in the heart of the old quarter but not on a noisy main road so was able to get a good sleep. The room was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Didn't talk to the staff much but found them pleasant enough. Although personally I wouldn't go back to Hanoi if you paid me I certainly recommend this hotel to anyone who would like to go.

There was nothing to really dislike about this hotel. Please realise that this is the REAL Especen Hotel, so don't be fooled by imitations. Book online using one of the popular websites and make sure the address is 28 Tho Xuong St. There are two fake ones very close to the cathedral and I initially went to the wrong one but they didn't have my booking, so check before you check in.

The staff were friendly and welcoming as well as speaking good English.

The rooms were incredibly spacious and comfortable as well as being clean.

Water was hot, AC worked well and the shower was okay. Don't flush anything down the toilet though, as it will block.

There was a balcony overlooking the street below and after about 10pm the noise died down and a good night's sleep could be had.

They also provided some drinks, including beer to put in the fridge.

The wifi was pedestrian speed but it didn't trouble me too much.

The location is very good with tonnes of good eating options nearby and still within easy walking distance of the old quarter, the lake and sights west of the centre.

Having met others I think it's possible to get the same for slightly less cash, having said this, I certainly don't feel cheated on $26 a night and I'm on a budget.

Be aware of fake Especen Hotels. The real one is this one, address 28 Tho Xuong St, round the back of the cathedral on the same street as Splendid Star Grand Hotel. Please don't be fooled.

Travelled to Vietnam with friends last fall and stayed at the Especen Hotel for 3 nights after our arrival in Hanoi before continuing on our travels to other parts of Vietnam. The room was very clean, aircon, fridge, private bathroom - everything was perfect! And all that for US$20/night! The staff were very pleasant and helpful in giving all kinds of info. Excellent and inexpensive Vietnamese food right outside the hotel door. Over all, a very pleasant experience and first impression of Vietnam :)

The room was almost like in a five star hotel. We had our own kettle with mugs there. TV, fridge and aircon all worked well and the bathroom was class. The bed was so comfy I'd have it at home if I could! We had our room in fifth floor so the only downside was climbing all the stairs. Location is good with lots of restaurants near by. We organized a taxi to airport through the Hotel and it ended up costing less than it would have with the meter on.

My boyfriend and I recently travelled to Hanoi and made the Especen Hotel home base for 5-6 days as we travelled to and from Halong Bay, Sapa and Mai Chau. The location in the old quarter was great with lots of activities and inexpensive delicious Vietnamese food right outside your door. Anh who works at the hotel, was super helpful, friendly, spoke very good English and was extremely patient as we peppered him with questions on which tours to take and sights to see.

Anh recommended the Royal Heritage Halong Bay 2-night, 3-day boat cruise, which we thoroughly enjoyed. All the details were taken care of and all we had to do was show up. We also took the hotel's advice and booked the overnight train to Sapa for a 2-day trekking excursion. The only thing we didn't care for was the Summit Hotel which is part of the package tour. The Summit Hotel is old, run down, very cold and the staff were neither friendly nor helpful. When we returned to the Especen Hotel I spoke with Anh and suggested he tell his manager to stop using the Summit Hotel as it reflects poorly on what I feel the Especen represents, good service, clean rooms and friendly, helpful staff. I would definitely recommend the Especen Hotel and will stay there again if ever back in Hanoi. When staying here also recommend drinks on the 2nd storey balcony of the Hanoi bar or Marilyn's overlooking St. Joseph's Cathedral. Thanks Especen for the great memories!

Room Tip: We liked the higher floors in the second tower as you were further away from the street/scooter nois...
