“Stay away!!!”
Reviewed 12 March 2007

We booked Thuy Lam because the rooms looked nice and they advertised that the staff spoke English, took credit cards, and could book us wonderful tours. Not so. We had booked our rooms before we got there (3), and when we checked in at 11 that morning, we were told two of our rooms wouldn't be available until after dinner. We were told we would not need to pay for the night, as we should not have had to. The staff spoke limited English, and were the most useless humans I have ever met. We tried to get help booking a train back to Hong Kong, and the girl didn't even know who to call. We also booked a tour, and paid more for a small group, because we were assured by the staff that they guide would be more attentive. Yeah, right. We started the tour an hour late, and the guide would only speak vietnamese. He gave these long lectures in Vietnamese, then would say about three sentences in English. When we got the mountain we were supposed to walk up, he left us and said he would see us in three hours, leaving us to do everything ourselves. When we told the staff we were irate that they had sent us on such a terrible tour, they did not understand, and just laughed at us. When we checked out, they made us pay for the first night that we were not supposed to, and they said they had never said we didn't have to pay. Also, they advertise free internet, but that is only if you can beat the staff to it. The staff would rather use 2 of the 3 computers to play video games than let paying customers use it.
It was stifling hot when I went, so I would leave my fan on everyday so that the room would be comfortable when I got back, and every monring, without fail, the staff would turn it off, and when I got back the room would be oppressive.
I would not stay there again for all the tea in China, and I recommend that you do not either.

We stayed at this hotel for about 5nts.
It is in a great location in the Old Quarter of Hanoi less than 5 mins walk to Hoam Kiem Lake.
Staff are friendly and very helpful.
Rooms basic but very comfortable and clean.
Very good value for money with a basic breakfast included and free internet access.
They can also help arrange and book excursions.

Just been there for a few nights. They were very kind so we decided to book at the hotel desk a trip to the Perfume Pagoda. The girl said everything is ok, that we had to be ready at 7.30 am for the pick up in the hotel reception the next day. The following morning the tour bus didn't show to pick us up. At 8.30 the other receptionist told us that all the tours to the Pagoda were full, so she offered us another one. By that time, we were already very mad, so we didn't take it. We finally found a way to go without a tour, more expensive, of course but by that time it was the only possibility. They apologize but that didn't give us a tour. For the rest, the hotel is what you can expect, a cheap place but clean.

  • Liked — The position in the Old Quarter
  • Disliked — Terrible pillows, noisy air con.
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't book trips in the front desk, they might not come...

Thuy Lam Hotel was a really nice hotel at a small price. The staff was fantastic, very friendly and helpfull. The location is very convenient as well. We used Thuy Lam as a base for the whole stay of our group in Vietnam. This meant that we had them arrange several of our trips and gave us rates that were among the best, held our luggage when we needed to, picked us up at the airport and drve us there and so forth. We were travelling with a high school group and staying there made it really easier for us. They also had free internet. All this for under $10 a night.

I recommend Thuy Lam Hotel and Mrs Moon's other hotel, the Hanoi Guest House without hesitation.

The rooms are clean and safe, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Mrs Moon herself is a charming and amusing hostess. Unlike other hotels in the area there is no hard selling of tours.

Breakfast is either baguettes or noodle soup (recommended).

The Hanoi Guest House even has wi-fi in some rooms.

I would certainly stay there again.

Highly recommended for anyone on a budget.

The staff in here are very friendly and helpful, ( ms Thin and Thaoz) they also offer free airport pick up - a definate plus point. It's a friendly family run hostel and they organised three great tours for us. In particular, a 2 day trip to Ha Long Bay on a very luxurous boat with gorgous food. We were very impressed. Would definately stay here again .

Ok, I understand that I was paying $5/night for this hotel, but really they should have charged $2.

I will give props to the hotel staff -- they are very gracious and genuinely helpful.

HOWEVER -- they arranged for our pickup from the airport in a taxi. All was well until the driver stopped at some random location in the Old Quarter and tried coaxing us to get out and began opening the trunk to remove our things. Only after our continuous insistence did he grudgingly take us to the Thuy Lam where we got no explanation for his dodgy behaviour.

When we got to the hotel (granted it was nighttime), the hotel looked like someone's messy home with a cluttered dining table and dark kitchen in back. The boy behind the counter suggested we stay on the 5th floor (a very tiring walk up) but there were no lights in the stairwell or on the floors!! And the rooftop looked frightening as if people were lurking about and looking into the rooms.

The room was OK -- with a cruiseship-sized bathroom (shower head over the questionable toilet), 2 sloppily made beds and nothing else. But the darkness and noisy area suggested that it was not the safest choice for our stay.

So we hightailed it for the Sheraton! There are definitely mid-range prices in between the two, but we were just so jostled, we wanted something guaranteed.
