After a muderously long train trip from southern China, then a crazy taxi ride to the hostel we were prepared for the worst. luckily when we arrived the staff were bubbly, helpful and more than ready to assist with making the most out of Hanoi.

We were only staying the one night before heading out to Ha Long Bay for a boat cruise. The rooms were clean and without Air Con during the day which for us is awesome! I never understand why people love coming to hot countries and then stuff themselves into a sub zero room even though they are walking back out into the heat again at a later stage. Sadly the Air Con comes on during the night but i slept next to the window and opened it so didn't freeze.

We stayed at the old hostel for this one night and got to meet people upstairs in the hostel bar. Super cheap drinks (well not as cheap as roadside stalls but still cheap) and great staff all ready to party their arses off any time.

After our Ha Long Bay cruise we came back and stayed at the new Hostel which was even better, new big rooms (we got a private suite), huge common area and large tv room with balcony as well as so many cool things to do such as beer pong comps, free walking tours, sports matches on the big screens and again everyone here was super friendly.

If you are going to stay in Hanoi you can't get any better backpackers than Hanoi Backpackers Hostel!!

Can't wait to go back.

After experiencing hotel after hotel that was trying to rip me off, coming to the Hanoi old Backpackers hostel was a true breath of fresh air. I felt safe, welcome and able to relax as soon as I arrived. The beds are great, the dorm rooms are typical, the bathrooms are small, but knowing I'm in a place that is honest and providing good service and fair priced trips was priceless. Great atmosphere, great location, free breakfast and even a free walking tour!! How sweet is that!! Love it. Truly backpackers for backpackers!!

Room Tip: Any are good. Make sure to book trips to Sapa and Halong through them. It's worth the price. Ta...

I would really recommend the backpackers hostel on Ma May! It's in a great location in the middle of the Old Quarter, you can easily walk or taxi to most things. The staff are friendly and very helpful. They make it really easy to book tours and at late notice too. We took the Perfume Pagoda tour through them which was great- the guide was excellent. I stayed in a private room and then a dorm, and they were both clean and very nice, plus the whole place felt very safe. Most of all this is a really fun place to stay with a great atmosphere, we met so many nice people from all over the world! The hostel runs walking tours every morning and activities in the evenings. Plus they have a great bar and a kitchen that does really nice food, and a chill-out space.

I only stayed here one night (the one on Ma May), because I couldn't stand it. There is no air conditioning during the day, so the whole place is stinking hot. The computers barely work, you have to look around forever to find one even to just get on facebook. The common area downstairs is ridiculously loud at all hours of the day or night, and not just because of the obnoxious drunkards, but also because they crank their music up louder than I ever would (and I love loud music) even during the daytime! It just makes the whole place come across as super unchill.
To top it off the place is very expensive for Vietnam. They offer a couple of options for Ha Long Bay tours but if you go just down the street you can get better offerings for literally a quarter of the price.
I can't recommend this place, I left and went to stay in a beautiful private room just down the street with two double beds, AC, my own hot shower, and a TV for a half the price of a dorm at Hanoi Backpacker's Hostel. Avoid.

Room Tip: Go down the street to one of the lesser known hotels, you'll get a much better room for a much s...

After travelling for over three months in SE Asia, Hanoi Backpackers was a breath of fresh air with it's young, approachable staff and fun outlook on the backpacker experience. It was practical, with personal lockers for backpacks and small lockers for belongings. Felt safe and secure, and the showers were very clean. THE FOOD was delicious too! We actually booked an extra night here because we were having too much fun:)

Also they arranged our Halong Bay trip which was one of the most memorable things I did in Asia!

Room Tip: Rooms are clean and personal.

i actually stayed at the new hostel on ma may st. it was clean, safe, and in a good location. however it is all centered around booze, partying etc and therefore not the best place if you want to chill out, especially in hanoi.
