“Hanoi Backpackers Hostel - Old Quarter Ma May Street”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

If you like to meet new friends, this is the place to be. This place is always hustling with backpackers and it's great to chat up. The beds are clean and there are clean towels & Hair dryer for rent. It has themed nights thus if you are a party animal and loves to drink, this is the place to be. I checked in on Jug Night and we got a free jug of beer by ordering a pizza. The place was quite noisy in the middle of the night but I am not sure if this happens to other nights as well. We only stayed a night and booked a tour to Sapa via this hostel. They have a storage space for backpacks and a comfortable lounge area where you can chill. My friend and I only stayed for a night here but it was a good place for us to relax/rearrange our bags whilst waiting for transfers to Sapa or the Airport. Overall, it was a good hostel experience. Clean bathrooms, free water refill, free breakfast.

PROS:
- Location (Ngo Huyen) is walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake and to the Cathedral.
- Online booking actually works and they reply to emails very fast
- Room (sweets double) is bigger than I've expected -- with bathtub

CONS:
- Booked hotel pickup well in advance. Upon arrival at the airport, pickup was NOT there. Waited for about 15 minutes and was already considering to take a taxi til the pickup arrived without apology
- Still on the airport transfer -- the driver is VERY reckless. The hostel should ensure that the pickup from the airport would be SAFE, no matter what the general driving conditions in Vietnam are
- Staff unfriendly -- they never smile and never greet the guests (with the exception of one frontdesk staff who is actually helpful)
- Breakfast will leave you wanting, I had to eat ANOTHER breakfast outside
- Guests are drunken noisy -- some Western guests have very loud voices when drunk and even if you ask them to "keep it down" they wouldn't care
- Overpriced
- They had me stay at 33 Ngo Huyen across the street even if I have booked for 48 Ngo Huyen. It was actually fine but they should have informed the guests about this beforehand.

Verdict: I loved Hanoi and would definitely return to this city, however, I will make sure NEVER to stay with Hanoi Backpackers.

This purpose built backpacker is very modeen, with very efficient, helpful and knowledgable staff. If you want to meet up with fellow travellers then this is place to go. There are various trips that you can do which may seem pricy, but the amount of people you meet makes the experience worth it. I did the Castaway tour, and the two leaders (at the time of writing Scotty and Wes) are absolute lunatics (as his new tattoo will testify). They'll keep you partying long and hard, but they get as good as they give and are sound lads.

We were also fortunate enough to go on a tour that they are planning on starting off to break up the trip between Hanoi and Hue. We got to see Cuc Phong National Park, with the monkey sanctuary (rescued from poachers) and do a night trek through the jungle. You have the option of a 20km bike ride into the jungle (which cleared my castaway hangover!) or taking the bus down to the accommodation. Nect day we got to see the Ving Moc Tunnels, where the Vietnamese rebels built tunnels underground to avoid having to vacate the area, and avoided US bombardment for 6 years, Truly incredible! We also went to a museum run by a Norwegian NGO who are helping clear the thousands of undetonated bombs still scattering Vietnam. When the trip is fully up and running the plan is to see a live controlled explosion of one such bomb which would be a quite an exerience. This would be a better experience for those more interested in the culture than the party scene.

Book in advance for this hostel as it is the place every backpacker is recommended, and usually you will have to wait a day or two to get in if you just turn up.

To Mick (part owner), Tom, Wes and Scotty, cheers for making it a great experience :)

Room Tip: Golide got a bit hot on the second floor. Tom on the 4th is good, but all same same to be honest. Th...

Best party hostel EVER. Feels very Western (which was comforting for us!!) and has extremely helpful staff at the front desk who speak English. The dorm rooms vary, our first was huge with lots of floor space, big windows overlooking the street and tons of natural light. Our second was more cramped with only one small window. Still, they are clean and comfortable. Each bed comes with a locker for your bag and a small shelf (equipped with an outlet!) that locks. Starting around 4pm everyday, the music is turned up and the drinks start flowin'. Great if you're looking to party and meet people, not so great if you would like to go to sleep before 10:30pm. At 10:30pm the staff move the party to a nearby bar and the main floor of the hostel empties out. Amazing breakfast included with your stay but the rest of the menu is mediocre and a little overpriced.

We went on the two night, three day Castaway trip to Halong Bay. Can't say we didn't have a great time but it was pretty disgusting. You sleep on mattresses with bug nets and are given damp duvets that probably haven't been dry in 5 years. When we went (early March) the nights were quite cold and we were not prepared for this and thus were freezing both nights. The food was god awful.... Felt sick to our stomachs after eating it and even looking back on it now makes our stomachs churn. The guides were insane and drunk from the minute the boat left right up until we arrived back at the hostel. The tubing was scary because the driver of the boat obviously wants you to wipeout in front of everyone watching which resulted in a neck injury. All this being said, we had fun and met some great people. Would never do it again but it was quite an experience!

This australian hostel in the center is a great place to meet new people and have a fun time in Hanoi. With or without friends doesn't matter, you'll make new friends anyway! It's located quite nice in the Old Quarter. You can walk to a lot of sightings in the city, and the street food you'll find on your way through the old quarter is amazing!

Furthermore, the hostel is clean, the showers are good, the wifi works and the breakfast is delicious in the morning.

The old lady in front in the hostel, who sells cheap beer is really funny and should grab a beer there!

If you happen to visit Hanoi as a backpacker this hostel is the best accomodation you can ask for!
We were travelling in a group of 10 friends and we were able to get a big dorm room just for us (5usd per night per person breakfast included).
The common areas were clean and the staff was friendly, although they've tried too much to convince us to buy their packaged tours.

There is a lot of life in this hostel with many events organized every night to entertain and (mostly) to encourage people to spend their money on the alcool served at the hostel's bar (very very expensive for the Vietnamese standards).

We were so happy with the experience that we've decided to keep going with the backpackers and while in Hue we've decided to stay for three nights in their local hostel: same great experience!
