“Food poisoning”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

the hostel was okay, clean, big, quite well organized but very loud. The only major problem was that I had food poisoning from a pizza at this hostel and they took no responsibility or action at all......

It's clean for vietnam, staff is almost friendly but if you don't book a tour there and you would like to storage your stuff there during your tour, you will be charged 10k a day just because you didn't bookt the expensive tour there, that's a absolute cheek! Breakfast isn't that special (3 options) and instant coffee. Alot of young and drunk party backpackers stay there when we where there, rooms are ok,we went at a external room beside the original hostel. 6 dorm room. Fan and aircon where ok, toilet was ok, bed was Standart. There are definitely cheaper and better solutions in hanoi.

Hi There, Thanks for your review of our hostel and we have now made all our staff aware that we have a strict no charge policy for storage for all of our guests. This has been in place for some time so we apologize that the staff member you dealt with was not aware. If you are ever back in town please see management so we can buy you a cold beer! Once again thanks for your feedback. VBH Crew Manager

My friend and I stayed here for one night, since it was where her twin brother was staying and she couldn't walk well enough to find another place. The "original" dorms of the hostel were full, so they put us across the street in what used to be the Symphony Hotel, which I'm assuming they acquired recently. The rooms were moldy under a thin layer of white-wash, stank of toilets, and had no windows. After seeing the room, I explained our situation to the front desk staff--my friend had just had an accident and needed a cleaner room with fresh air to keep from getting a nasty infection. They showed me two other rooms on the 5th floor, where my friend clearly couldn't get to in her condition. We later saw the rooms in the original part of the Original Backpacker's Hostel, and they were quite nice, but full up. We did stay, in the end, having already paid and not being in shape to go anywhere else.

We hung out in the common room. Couldn't get the TV or air con working. Asked several times for staff to come sort it out for us, and they all just shrugged and wandered back across the street.

The only person who works there and gives a damn is the old night security man. He saw our situation, and got us some water, fixed the TV, and turned on the AC for us. I went out to get some food and medical supplies for my friend, and when I came back, he was sitting beside her and holding her hand, watching "Good Morning Vietnam". He knew about 8 words of English, ("Vietnam TV! Good! You, good friend!") but I swear he's the best thing about that hostel. If you meet Lan, give him a high five for me. He ought to be the manager.

If you do stay here, check your rooms first. The original part of the Original Backpacker's hostel is ok, but it's all overpriced. My friend and I shared a nice clean twin room up the road for only $16, and this place is $9 for a crowded dorm. The included breakfast leaves a lot to be desired, and the service does as well.

Room Tip: If you do stay here, check your rooms first. The ones that aren't directly upstairs from the che...

Your comments have been passed to our team and we have just recently upgraded our private rooms so we hope this area of the hostel is now at a higher standard then you experienced. I will pass on the good feedback to Mr Lan our night security man. All the best for the rest of your trip. VBH Crew Manager.

Agreed the location is spot on and thats why I have given it two stars, but there are hundreds of hotels for cheaper price and same quality or same price and higher quality in the same area as this.
A few things that need improvement the room- they were disappointing as they lacked character and were just basic ,old and needing upgrades.
They cleaners did not lock my room after cleaning leaving a potential security threat to my passports and belongings.
The staff were all to keen about selling packages, trips, upsized breakfasts than in giving you a warm and friendly service. Also the night time staff were aggressive and rude. The bar hop consists of moving from their two hostels with no stops in between , (quite clever for them though).
If you want an authentic Hanoi experience dont stay here you will be disappointed.

While the facilities and vibe of the place are generally really good, for what you get, the price (£28 for a double) is really high compared to the rest of the places we've stayed in Asia.
In addition, the wifi was either not working or weak, and while there were computers to use, these were also rather slow.
Cannot really fault the room, though it was a bit weird to get shown into your room, in a corner on the 6th floor, to find a member of staff doing her makeup...odd.

Great common areas, clean rooms, lockers that work, breakfast included... Being used to less then great hostels Hanoi Backpackers is an awesome place to stay! Yes, it is a party hostel, so if you want to stay on your own and have a quit night's sleep this may not be the optimal place, still didn't think the party disturbed to much though as they turn off the music downstairs at 12 pm. We stayed for two nights and had one of the best experiences in Vietnam!

It is a party hostel definitely where you can meet lots of people and always guaranteed a night out but they do close down at 11pm every night so you can always get a good nights sleep, unless you get woken up by drunk fools (a risk with any dorm).
Because it is well known I think the prices are higher than they should be.
My advice would be find somewhere cheaper, then head the bar here in the evening to meet people and have a good time.
