“I Picked up this Hotel for It's Name”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

This review is very very late. I stayed in this hotel three times already. While planning my trip to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, I was surprised to see Democracy Hotel listed in one of the hotel websites. I checked the details and found the price and location acceptable so I did not hesitate to make an online booking considering the political significance of the hotel's name. The hotel is located near the Hoan Kiem Lake and a number of attractions can be reached by foot. The rooms are OK, and the complimentary breakfast served at the rooftop restaurant is modest but acceptable. It consists of french bread, butter and jam, hotdog and fried egg, coffee and juice.

There is a tour desk at the hotel where you can book tours. We booked the Halong Bay One Day Tour and it turned out to be ok. The receptionists were friendly and helpful, they were able to book our train tickets to Hue and provided free tansport to the train station.

The facilites of this hotel are basic but for the price I paid and the service I got from the staff I feel this is good value for money. Please note that they have another property named Bodega Hotel which is located in the Old Quarters. They move guests to their sister hotel whenever the rooms at Democracy Hotel are overbooked.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony for the view of the neighboring buildings (usually houses); it has a b...

Walls were covered in damp and rooms smelt damp and musty. In fairness they were cleaned daily though not a great job done. Booked a 3 day halong day trip through them. The trip was pretty poor, non existent guide, awful food and very poorly organised. Huge amount of time wasted waiting around doing nothing. Location is really good though, everything is within walking distance which was nice.

One of the worst places I have stayed anywhere in the world!! Staff was pleasant but told us there were no rats in the room even after we discovered a rather large rat trap and showed it to them. They laughed and claimed it was a joke. There were rat droppings on the floor as well. The room smelled of mold and was not very clean. We went out for the afternoon and came back to discover a rat had chewed a large hole in a pair of my shorts, which had to be thrown out. The hotel staff again claimed to have no knowledge of the rat issue and refused to compensate us for the destroyed clothing and so we switched to a much nicer adn cleaner hotel for the same price.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere so you will enjoy Hanoi as it is a really cool city to explore!!

We have spent 4 months in Vietnam and stayed in over 20 different hotels and this is by far the worst hotel i have EVER stayed in. The walls are very damp and the rooms stink of mold. We complained several times but the staff didn't seem that bothered about it. Our clothes and shoes were starting to grow mold from the Damp conditions. I would highly recommend looking for alternative accommodation.

We stayed in this hotel and it was disgusting. Most rooms are dark and dingy with no window. One of the walls in our room was soaking wet and mouldy! The smell was disgusting and most probably bad for health. We mentioned this to staff who were nice at first and said they will sort it. Nothing happened and we ended up waking up to not only the whole wall soaking but 4 big patches on the ceiling that were dripping over the bed, it smelt so bad! We mentioned again to the man downstairs who was once very nice but now suddenly became very rude, he handed us a key to another room angrily without saying a word, we guessed that meant "move". We looked in other rooms below ours and they were just as bad! one had some flowers stuck on the wall to try and cover it up!? We had mould growing all over our shoes and bags and my partners asthma became extremely bad! We have now moved hotels to a lovely clean, spacious room which is much cheaper! I wish we moved sooner! I do not recommend this hotel!!!

We were a group of four girls looking to book treks and bus journeys, went in and they seemed really helpful and at good prices. We booked a 3 day tour in halong bay, the staff told us everything was included however they 'forgot' to tell us about the options on the third day where we were to go to monkey island. The halong guide refused to take us to monkey island as this option wasn't on the receipt. We went back to democracy hotel to complain about it when we got back and they claimed not to know anything about it! We had to find the tour book ourselves and to show them what they had shown us. We finally spoke to the lady who we booked with and she apologised and admitted it was her fault and offered us $2 in compensation, that was an outrage as the trip cost in total $90. We managed to get $9 back in the end by kicking up a huge fuss and there were other customers present. We had a bus booked with them that evening to go to hue from hanoi. A small bus was suppose to arrive at 6pm to take us to the main bus, however a small taxi arrived at 6.30 instead to take us and they seemed very eager for us to get in quickly. We then raved at the main bus feeling very stressed as the bus was about to go and they didn't understand the ticket that the hotel had given us. We were the last people on the bus therefore being given the last uncomfortable seats. To anyone booking through this hotel I would highly recommend not too and to see past the polite staff that cannot help themselves from telling lies just to get some money. Horrendous experience and ruined days that we were very much looking forward to. Very disappointed.

The only good thing about this hotel is its well situated ... But as almost all the other hotel! Other wise was not clean moisture on the wall a hole on the roof in the bathroom. I usaly dont complain about hotel! I don't pay a lot so I don't expect a lot but i payd less for a lot more quality than that one... Its the worst hotel I stayed in 2 month in vietnam i check out on the next morning to go next door where its the same price and a lot better!
