If you're looking to have a break off the beaten track of Hanoi and relax for a bit, go to Lenin Park (aka Thong Nhat Park), not to be confused with the Lenin Statue which is another thing. Nice lake at the south end of it, ordering the French quarter.

I went (at least) twice. Once running alone during the day and once with my family in the evening. The evening was amazing - a cross-section of Hanoi excercising, chatting, playing. Large groups of women doing aerobics to pop music; groups of young kids breakdancing amongst a large group of ballroom dancers in the same dance area (with no apparent conflict or question of infringing on each other's space); rollerbladers, soccer players, people working out, kids on playgrounds...it was great to see everyone going about their business, while we were the only non-Vietnamese there on a beautiful night. Admission is 4,000 VND for adults and 2,000 for kids.

Took some photos to show 'We have been here' and that's about it. Ain't nothing much but it's close-by the flag tower and a war museum so no harm crossing the road to take a few shots.

This is not the Lenin Statue but rather a large park that once bore his name (I think). We did get confused about this and our first 'visit' was to the Lenin Statue rather than the park.

We visited at night and had to pay to get in (minimal fee). Once in we enjoyed wandering and watching all the folk dancing, exercising and playing games.

The lighting in the kids' playground was very poor so we cut short our time there and headed to the paid play area featuring a big ball-pit, pay-per-go mini rides and climbing frame. It was rather fun and the kids had a blast whilst we sat and watched in peace knowing that kids could not wander off.

Enjoy!

Empty square with a fellow putting one hand on his hip(fearing pickpockets) and the other hand holding on to his jackets. Lenin was never a really good looking guy, but the flowers in the surrounding garden are pretty
