A calm and relaxing haven in the heart of Hanoi's bustling Old Quarter.
We found this hotel completely by accident. We had been living in Hanoi for 9 months, teaching English and travelling by all over North Vietnam by motorbike, we only have 2 weeks left in Hanoi and we stayed here!
After a full day of checking out various places of varying price and quality we had had enough and settled on two or three fairly standard, low-cost hotels. None of them were particularly inspiring, but they were cheap and gave us a bed to sleep in until we left. As we started walking back to where we'd parked the motorbike, something caught our eye in the foyer of a small building; several vintage European mopeds. These are basically antique motorised bicycles with small petrol engines, extremely common in France from the 1930's to the 1960's, but quite rare to see in Hanoi, even with the history of French occupation years earlier.
The owner, Mr Thuc, is an architect who now teaches at Hanoi university and he has designed every inch of the hotel himself. He is one of those rare people who emanates calm and kindness from every part of his face. You can't help but smile when he talks to you!
On the first floor is a dining room and social space with a traditional low table, countless Asian and Indian artifacts and an upright piano which he is more than happy for anyone to enjoy playing. On the top floor is a beautiful rooftop garden with plants, flowers and a bamboo shelter.
All of the bedrooms are designed and decorated with the same care and attention as the rest of the hotel with big, comfortable beds (and soft western matresses!) The furniture is a mix of hand-carved and bamboo. In the bathrooms everything is considered, from the jet spa bath and stone-tiled floor to the hand-crafted soap and shampoo jugs from nearby Ba Trung Pottery Village.
If you are looking for a special place to stay where you can relax in piece and enjoy genuine Vietmese hospitality coupled with South East Asian Buddhist philosophy, yet still be right in the middle of Old Hanoi...This is the place for you! And please tell Mr Thuc that we're looking forward to repaying his kindness and hospitality in the Philippines in the next couple of years. Namaste!
