“will return for a second stay”
Reviewed 13 April 2011

I stayed here last week because our meeting was in one of the ballrooms. It was a busy time for me so I didn't get to do much else. What I saw, I liked. The location on the lake is great. The staff were helpful & friendly. I will come back for a longer stay next time.

We have been traveled trhu Vietnam from Saigon to Hue to Hoi An to Ha Long Bay to Hanoi, It has been a great expperience and all hotel were greaat, until we arrived here in Hanoi. The hotel location is far from the town centre and there is nothing surround it, It take 15 minutes by taxi everytime you want to go into town. No free WIFI or internet; it cost 10USD per hour or 18USD for a day! This is the only hotel that does not provide such basic standard service. We was really looking forward to finish our trip in a high, but this hotel was the biggest dissapointment for the whole trip.

A perfect Hotel to stay in Hanoi, maybe in whole of Vietnam. Nothing comes closer. Great lake view from almost every room. Excellent restaurants, with most courteous staff members. Great airy rooms with exceptional value for money.

I was staying at the InterContinental Hanoi for a 2 day conference and was impressed with the quality of the hotel. The rooms are a good size and have a balcony overlooking the lake. Bathroom was fantastic. Had all the usual necessities of a business hotel. The conference rooms were also very good and so was the service. Only thing to note is some of the staff didn't speak English well. Breakfast and lunch was also of a consistent quality. Internet was not cheap though. No free wireless. P.S. The gym was fantastic.

Overall the service is poor. The only exceptions really were the concierge desk (great help with restaurant reservations) and housekeeping (quick and friendly response). We had booked online and the system had allowed us to book a room big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids (age 13&11). We do this often when travelling and it usually turns out to be a room with 2 double beds. Not in this case however. We got a room with 1 double bed and the offer of a rollaway single bed at additional cost! The check-in staff seemed unsympathetic to this mess-up. Before offering a rollaway bed, they suggested that all 4 of us sleep in 1 bed! Many rooms are situated on the lake. Sounds fine until you realise that you look out of the window in the morning to find a local fisherman in a boat 1 metre from your terrace and looking into your room. The hotel appeared only partially full, yet we were initially allocated a room at the back overlooking a construction/dump site. The in-room safe deposit box was missing from the room so we had to use the lockers at reception. The bell staff were always loitering for tips. The location is a 10-15 minute taxi ride into the old quarter. Generally the place had an unwelcoming feel – unlike the rest of Vietnam, which was fabulous.

The hotel is beautiful and the rooms are lovely, but there's a serious management problem here. I couldn't believe how many things went wrong for a one night stay: the AC didn't work and the room remained very hot so we had to open the balcony door, which is when we discovered the lock to the door was broken and we couldn't lock it, allowing easy entry from adjoining balconies and the garden right below. Management just smiled and said they would fix everything after we checked out. I tried to set up wi-fi on my blackberry and I couldn't get access because, as the front desk explained, I "didn't pay a high enough rate for the room." I was steamed by then but needed access so agreed to pay the $18 to hook up only to find that they were having IT problems and it was completely down the whole time. I asked the concierge to make a dinner reservation, had to go down twice in person and called 3 times on the phone, because no one would call me back to confirm. I was really frustrated and asked to speak to the manager and was told that there were no managers in the building. We went to the front of the hotel and asked where the restaurant was and the bellman told us it was a 20 minute cab ride away, however when he called a cab, the cab driver was arguing about something and didn't want to take us, but the bellman persuaded him to. The cab ride lasted ONE BLOCK! No wonder the taxi didn't want to take us there! It was right across the street! The next morning, we went down for breakfast and came back at 9 only to discover both our keys had been deactivated. The front desk told us we didn't know how to use card keys and sent a security guard up to show us. Of course he couldn't get them to work and we had to go down and get another set of keys. What's going on with this hotel? I've never had such a string of problems in what is considered a first class property. Their staff appears to have had no training in any type of hotel work and their management apparently doesn't care. I would never stay at this place again. By way of comparison, we stayed at the Metropole in Hanoi for two nights and it was absolutely world class: great service, luxurious rooms, wonderful food, and terrific ambience. Skip the Intercontinental by all means!

My friends and I stayed at the Intercontinental for 2 days. The hotel is a nice peaceful getaway from the noise and chaos of the city. The hotel is on the edge of West Lake with some rooms right on the water. The weather was very misty so it gave the hotel a more romantic feel. Our taxi driver had much difficulty in finding the hotel since Intercontinental is tucked away from the main road and the small blue sign on the road is very easy to miss. I would definitely make sure that your driver knows how to find the property.

For our first night, we had rooms in the main building with a pool view. The decor was simple with a local flavor and the rooms had the standard amenities of an Intercontinental property. For our second night (after coming back from a junk cruise to Halong Bay), we were upgraded to a room in one of the island pavilions. The room was exactly the same as the one in the main building but you are directly on the lake. The buildings on the island pavilion seem much older though since they are in much need of a paint job. You can also get a bit spooked at night walking from the pavilions back to the main building. I actually preferred staying in the main building because of this.

The employees provided warm greetings and quick service. I ordered from the pillow menu at about midnight and received my pillows within 10 minutes. We also didn't have time to eat breakfast on our first day so the manager was kind enough to open the deli early for us. The pastries at the deli were very tasty but the breakfast at Cafe du Lac was just average. The spread has much variety though from Japanese to American to Vietnamese cuisine. The hotel has a nice outdoor bar and you basically have it to yourself since it's empty most of the time.

Overall, I definitely recommend the Intercontinental if you don't want to be disturbed by the hustle and bustle of the city. You can also never go wrong with a beautiful lake view!
