I booked at Cat Huy Hotel based on Tripadvsior reviews, which were pretty accurate. This is a great hotel for the money. It's located up a small alley, but we'd organised an airport transfer through the hotel so had no problems finding it. I loved the alley location - there was a small market in the alley every morning which was fascinating to walk through. All the major tourist sights around Ho Chi Minh are in walking distance and there are some great restaurants and bars nearby.

The rooms were massive, spotlessly clean and really comfortable. Free Wifi was great, fast and reliable. Free drinking water, a mini fridge with cheap minibar. Aircon was effective, and our room had a balcony overlooking the alley and the neighbouring rooftops. The hotel was really quiet at night, but it seemed like a very safe area and there was always a member of staff on duty. Breakfast was included and the Pho was excellent, but there was western options too like omelette with delicious fresh baguettes.

We also booked a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels through the hotel. It was a bit more expensive than the backpacker cafes along Pham Ngu Lao advertise - US$7 compared to US$4, but the group was much smaller and our tour guide (Chi) seemed much more engaged than others we saw. So the $3 premium was definitely worth it. Also ask about the boat back to HCM from the tunnels, a much more interesting ride than the bus!

Overall a great hotel - would definitely stay there any time I'm back in Vietnam.

This hotel is the best of its class for both the budget and the mid-range categories. The rooms are spotless and spacious; its location on the fringes of the backpacker district can't be beat; and the group of young men working in the hotel were extremely friendly, honest, and provided very courteous service. We look forward to staying here again on our next stay in Saigon.

Rooms
The rooms seem newly refurbished and feature comfortable beds, tea, blow dryer, a tv, and new bathroom fixtures, including a glass enclosed shower. The double bed is actually two beds pushed together, but we only noticed this our second night. The guys who clean the room do a fantastic job, and we always came back to a spotless room.

Location
The hotel is located on a quiet alley on the backpacker district on Pham Ngu Lao district, which we found convenient for seeing Saigon's sights, doing tours to the Cu Chi tunnels, and getting transportation to go to Cambodia. Downtown and most of the museums were a 20-30 minute walk away. Most of the budget tours around Saigon leave from Pham Ngu Lao street. Also, the Sapaco bus company leaves for Phnom Penh at a stop right in front of the hotel. Other buses to Cambodia and open-tour buses for Vietnam leave just down the street.

The 20-something aged men who work at the hotel are very friendly and courteous. We upgraded rooms the first of our three nights at the hotel and the staff moved our belongings to our new room while we were out for the day.

Two notes: We wouldn't have found the alley by ourselves without detailed directions, so we are glad that we took an aiport transfer from the hotel. Second, some of the rooms are located on the fourth or fifth floor after a steep climb up the stairs, and there is no elevator. Those who have difficulties with stairs would be best to get a room on the first or second floor.

we spent several nights here. The Hotel seems family run to me which I think is always a good indicator as people care more in general. For Cat Huy this is definetely the case. The room was big quiet and always clean. Staff were very friendly.
Generally the Hotel is in a narrow side street in the tourist part of town, so don't be fooled by the small alley you'd need to walk down.
Advantage of the location is that the house itself is undisturbed by the traffic noise. However if you are unlucky and get the room on ground floor you'll wake up at 7am as this is when breakfast is served just outside your room.
There was Wireless available which is also a very good thing.

The biggest asset of the hotel is the location - especially if you arrive by bus its mere meters away from the bus station, thus saving you the hassle of trying to negotiate with the notorious Vietnamese taxis. Everything is walking distance from there.

The rooms are big enough, spotlessly clean and with modern equipment.

I came to Vietnam to experience the culture - but if you stay in Pham Ngu Lao you will only find noisy American and European drunk teenagers. The hotel is itself fine - but the service is not really all that warm. I didn't sleep at all one night as my neighbors seemed to have a party going on in their room most of the night. I would recommend staying near the Opera House instead.

We stayed in Cat Huy last November 2010, based on the recommendations that I read at tripadvisor.

I wasn't expecting very much since it is a budget hotel, but it turned out better than I expected! The room was very very clean, and the bathroom was large.. considering the price! Bed was clean and there weren't any dust mites. TV was a flat screen, which was impressive (we got a deluxe room by the way).. and best part of all, our room had its very own router! Wifi was excellent :)

The amenities were sufficient (they even had a little sewing kit - not a lot of hotels have that). Hot water was awesome, especially after a full day of walking. Water in the bathroom was strong.

The service was very good. The room was cleaned everyday, and our towels were changed everyday. Even late at night/early morning (we arrived past 1am Vietnam Time) when you needed something there was a receptionist who would answer your call - shame on me for forgetting his name, he was extremely pleasant! Breakfast option was limited, bread and omelette or pho (beef/chicken). But then again, with the price that you are paying for, even breakfast was a steal.

Location was good, it is in the heart of District 1. It is located in an alley, but don't be scared. People are very warm and friendly. Remember that we arrived at the hotel well past 1AM Vietnam Time and we didn't experience any kind of violence from the locals; they were in fact, very friendly. Pointing us to the direction of the hotel. It is around a 15-20 minute walk from Ben Thanh to the hotel. We did go all around District 1 by walking, except when we rode the cyclo to the war museum.

The hotel also has a bank right outside the alley and an independent ATM machine right beside it - this was indeed, very convenient. Ü

There's also a day market in the alley, where you can buy fresh meat, fruits and vegetables. A taste of local Vietnam life. Ü

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel and would also go back. I had a really good time at Vietnam, and after a long day of tours and walking.. Cat Huy made it feel like home.
